Paper models

Any opinions on paper models? It seems to be the only way to get a Wright Flyer in 1/72.

I'm not fond of them myself. Paper doesn't hold curves particularly well, and I generally don't see paper models as very convincing no matter how well they're built.

There's also another issue of print registration. Just as decals in a plastic kit that are out of register are a nightmare, the entire color areas on the paper you cut the components out of on a paper model being out of register is even worse as there's really nothing you can do about it.

I'd say keep looking for a non paper kit of the Wright flyer, you may have to look to more obscure vacuum form or resin kits, but I'm sure a 1/72 of it is out there in something better than paper.

Additionally, if you think cleaning dust off plastic models is a chore from Hell, don't get into paper models, they're 10 times worse to clean.

I see your point. I don't think decals would be a problem in the case of the Wright Flyer but your other points are valid. Thank you.

Back in the days before plastic paper kits were all the go. I can remember as a small child back in 1950 being taken to the local hobby shop. It was several miles away is Seaford, we lived in Newhaven a the time (thats Sussex England) and parting with my saved pennies to buy a paper kit. Spitfires were all the go then!
Ah the memories.
Now you can down load them on the net! If you can wait until Thursday I will get the address for you.

I built a pair of paper models in 1/32 a year ago, they are funny to build and look nice but the paper has limitations to reproduce finer details; if you decide to build one get before a sealed display case because they are fragile.

Good luck!

I wonder if you can use the paper plane as template on syrene sheet to make a Wright Flyer? Sound almost doable if you used rod stock and thin styrene sheets.Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

I plan to build a 1/72 Hubble Space Telescope for my space shuttle some day and I found NASA's paper model of the satellite to be almost an exact match in size. I plan to use it as a template when I finaly get around to building it in plastic.
