The Sands of Kittyhawk!
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, November 2, 2003 10:14 PM
Iam about to build the base for a small (1:100) diorama of the take off of the Wright Flyer and it struck me that I havent a clue about the colour of the surface. Was it sand or tussock grass or what? and what colour was the sand?

I don't know, but if it was sand wouldn't it be neat to use the actual sand as part of the diorama ground work! Kind of a historical touch stone.

The dunes where the Wright brothers memorial is are a yellow/light tan color. However i think the flyer tookoff on rails didnt it? If it did the grass is a bermuda or crabgrass down there. It has a light green/tannish color to it.

Thanks for the info.
Yes the a/c did take off from rails wooden I believe with a catapult system of weights and a trolley.
The actual sand from Kittyhawk would be great but I think that Australian Customs and Dept of Agg would have a collective heart attack.
