Weekend Madness 2024
Posted by GMorrison on Thursday, November 21, 2024 9:40 PM

Let's give this a shot for Buddy.

From the big fluffball in 2020:

"I know it's WAY too early for Christmas music, but it's that time of year once again.  What time is that you ask.  Why simply, it's WEEKEND MADNESS GB time of course!  What is that you ask?  Why it's simply the rootenest, tootenest group build to ever grace these webpages.  Legends will be made, songs of victory will be sung, and mortals will become modelling gods.  Well golly, what do I have to do, you ask.  Well, I'm glad you asked.  First I want you to pick a model, any model will do.  Then, I want your time.  Oh great, you say.  But wait, I say, I don't want six months or a year I want 48 hours.  Wait a minute you say, 48 hours?  Yep, only 48 hours.  That's the goal, 48 hours from start to finish. But, you start to sputter. No buts says I, if I can do it, you can do it.  Many have sung songs of victory, and many have sung mournful dirges of defeat.  Will you join this quest?

The start date is November 28.  But that's Thanksgiving day you say.  It's also the start of a four day weekend for us here in the States, and for the rest of the world it's as good a day as any to start.  Besides, it's tradition. This build normally peters out around New Years (which is good because that's when the Close Air Support build kicks off not so subtle plug there).

The Rules.

1. Pick a kit.  Normally I'd recommend a simple kit, something you can finish in the allotted time.  However, there are some that like to burn the thing to the ground and pick the latest million piece wonder.  However, most of us like to watch the world burn as well and will gladly pull up a chair, pop some popcorn, and watch your attempt and root you on to either a  spectacular victory or a spectacular defeat.

2.  ALL kits will be unstarted.  Photographic proof is required.  A pic of the unstarted kit with either a working clock in the background or a timestamp is required.  Crossovers are allowed.

3.  You have 48 hours, that's it.  You start at 8:00pm on Friday, you have until 8:00pm on Sunday to finish.  I realize that some don't get the traditional weekend off, so pick a 48 hour window and go for it.

4.  Take pics.  It gives the rest of us something to look at while we're waiting for our masterpieces to dry.

5.  HAVE FUN!  This is not the build for building your latest contest entry, although some have gone on to win, place, or show at their local contest.  This is for blowing out the cobwebs and finishing something.

6.  Did I mention you only have 48 hours?

7.  Did I mention have fun?

I think we've covered every genre in this build, so all are welcome.  If I've forgotten something slap me upside the back of the head and remind me.  If you have any questions, please ask.  To Infinity, and beyond!"

I'm going to build the AMT 1/48 Beechcraft Staggerwing. I've learned my lesson doing these builds.

Painting is my Kryptonite.

Hard to do with house guests.

This'll be a "after homework" build.

I've built that sucker Bill and you have a lot of fitting and filling in your future.  I will get the decals for my Hasegawa F-102A Monday if USPS doesn't send them somewhere else.

6 hours later:

Landing gear and wheels painted, minimal cockpit painted and installed in fuselage.  Wing parts test fitted then assembled.  Test fit of resin missile bay door requires shims at aft end to mate with wing properly.  Wing removed (was just pressed in place) and missile bay door gaps filled using thick CA and dental alginate.  Nose test fit revealed a nose badly out of joint.  Gap left on one side and top, awaiting filling.  Usual Hasegawa F-102 gap on left side of tail filled with Tamiya grey putty after taping close to seam, tape removed while putty dries to be replaced for sanding.  Masks made for transparency.  Tail cone and exhaust test fitted, exhaust glued in place on fuselage.

The stopping point for tonight.  I was hoping to get some color on it but the filler in some areas just isn't ready yet.

Bill, razordws (Dave) wants to get in with a Revell 1/72 TL Jager "Flitzer".  He can't sign in so I will be a proxy for that,  He won't be able to get started for about two weeks,

It appears my 48 hours is up and I have been found lacking!

Oh well, it was challenging and fun.  Here is where its at, and some masks I made for the detail painting.

Finished pictures today.  32 hours overdue!  It was a challenge and also great fun, as well as a good use for an older kit that might otherwise never gotten to the building bench.

The last photo is of my collection of 1/72 Convair Deltas.  Sure wish someone would do a better B-58 in this scale.

Nice collection of deltas.

A 1/72 B-58 kind of boggles my mind, as the 1/48 version had some intricate and complicated spaces to model as was, so getting a 1/72 to pretty impresses as a task.

Although a 1/72 collection of Convair does sound like an intruging endeavor.

I thought the Italeri kit came out ok.

The Hustler seems to be an a/c that most Airforce folks I know never crossed paths with and I've never seen one. Kind of like the Minute Man missile.

AFA 1/72 Convair stuff, not Delta; the Monogram Peacemaker comes to mind.

And, when I was a kid, we used to fly down from SFO to Santa Barbara every couple of weeks to my mom's parents ranch. UAL supported the route with Convair 440s. If it was a quiet day, the pilot might descend and circle around San Simeon.
