Intro to GB's and upcoming builds. Long post (get snacks)
Posted by Bish on Monday, April 29, 2013 9:49 AM

Next, we have had a lot of new members join up this year, and this is great. A few of our dedicated GB addicts have unfortunately moved on, and while a few of the new members have jumped right in, it would be great if we could get some more to give them a try.

I know a lot of the new members have been out of the hobby for many years, and some never had the advantage of the Internet. A couple have asked about GB's, what they are, how do they run etc. So, for those new to the world of GB's this is a quick guide. I am sure my fellow GB addicts will jump in with there own advice and ideas, so feel free.

A Group Build is basically what it says on the tin. A group of people get together and build models, which are linked in some way, albeit sometimes rather loosely. Being that we are spread all over the world, we of course can't do this face to face, but some clubs do run GB's. Many other forums also run these, but on all the ones i have seen, none of them run them like they do here, and i have found FSM's way by far the most relaxing and easy going.

If you have an idea for a GB, sometimes it might be worth putting out a feeler thread, to see how much interest there is. Because the GB's here are run by the members, that often means there are many running at one time. This does mean that sometimes a GB will just fade away, for what ever reason. But as long as the host is active and the members keep an interest, the GB will work fine. And while there are always GB for those of us into military subjects, if you are interested in one of the less covered genre's, trains for example, you can always start one yourself. Even if only 2 or 3 others join in, as long as the stick to it, it can be a god GB. However, if you are planning a GB that many people might be interested in, it might be worth seeing what else is running. If you are planning a GB on German armour and there are already 3 or 4 running, it might be worth putting yours on hold. I have seen some great GB ideas not take off simply because others where to committed already.

So, if you want to join a GB or even start on yourself, there are usually a number of rules. These are pretty standard and also pretty easy going. In no particular order.

Subject: What the GB is about. This could be a specific aircraft type, such as the 190 GB http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/modeling_subjects/f/29/t/150191.aspx

Builds from a certain battle or year, we currently have the 1943 GB http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/modeling_subjects/f/29/t/149627.aspx

Or my own D-day GB http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/modeling_subjects/f/29/t/154026.aspx

It could be a spcific scale, such as the 1/72nd http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/modeling_subjects/f/29/t/153063.aspx

Or it could be a very open Gb with the builds haveing only the slightest connection, such as the Gift GB.http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/modeling_subjects/f/29/t/151389.aspx

And there are of course many more examples currently on going. With the specific GB's, others may well be building the same subject as you. This means they may have access to info that you don't, which can be very handy. With the more open GB's you get to see subjects you may never have thought of which could lead you to learning new methods of weathering, or even trying something totally different. In my Gift GB we have had 2 jets, 2 WW2 aircraft and a Gundam ( that was a new one on me) so far, and we have WW1 aircraft, sports cars, armour, pick ups and sci fi to look forward to.

Time Frame: The host will give a start date for the GB. The thread is usually posted a few weeks, maybe a month, before this start date. Builds cannot be started before this, though often partly started kits are allowed. If you have just put the cockpit together, this should be fine, but if your about to finish the weathering on that tank, that might be a bit much. There will also be an end date. Your build should be completed by this date to qualify for the all important badge. But the end dates can, and often are, moved back to accommodate latecomers or people who have had problems with the build. Most GB's tend to run from 8 months to a year. If the build is to long, it can just fade away into nothing.

If you want to host a GB and are not sure, make it shorter. Its better to extend the GB than have to to long and it just dies a slow death.

Scale: this is usually open to anything, but now and again, the build will be based on a certain scale.

OOB or AM up to the gills: usually you can add what ever you want to your build, on the odd occasion, such as the My First Time GB http://cs.finescale.com/fsm/modeling_subjects/f/29/t/151172.aspx its only whats in the box or what you can make yourself. But you are never pressured to add those extra, and expensive goodies.

Crossovers. usually, the host will allow crossovers. This means yuou can enter a build that in anotehr GB. But somtimes they will state no crossovers. If this is the case, you need to decide which GB you wnat to be in. But rather than do a crossover and try and get two or more badges for one build, you could do a WiP thread as well and share the build with those not in the GB. You will get much more feedback that way.

Most importantly, post progress pics, as often as you think it worth while. And if the kit has any issues, make sure you highlight this and post a pic of it. This may not only help others help you, but may give others notice of what to expect from that kit.

Most most importantly, have fun. We have some stunning builders on here. But if you don't feel your skills are up to that level, don't worry. Every one is welcome. My builds have come on leaps and bounds in the last 5 years, mostly because of what i picked up in GB's. I saw ideas and methods i may have missed and was able to ask about them and get more info.

Be warned, they are addictive. Since my return to the hobby in 2008 i have built 19 models, every single one for a GB here on FSM.

If there's anything your not sure of, please ask. And if any of the other GB addicts want to add anything, please do.

Good thread Bish. The only things I'd add are extensions: Not a good idea in most cases. Nothing seems to kill off a gb than the host granting an extension(or the infamous gb than has no end date). Not a good motivator at all. The other issue with extensions is then the gb keeps running and doesn't allow room for new gb's to come in and get going.

Also, Hosts should consider time frames of less than a year, for the same reasons as above: Good motivation if less time is given and also opens up more time in a year for new gb's to open up.

These are just thoughs for people new to GBs, not rules.

Bish, thank you for the info.  I for one had these questions and now I know.  I joined the 1/72 Mania GB and wasn't sure what to expect, but I am having a blast with it!  (no, you haven't converted me completely yet! Smile)  After reading the upcoming GB's, I am even more excited.  I have a ton of armor kits, but have not actually put but maybe one together.  The armor based GB's that are coming up has got be thinking about doing some then.  I have almost every AA gun (German that is) because I think they are cool.  Now I will have a reason to jump in and do some of these that have been sitting around.  Anyway, I think this will be an inspiring thread, especially for the new folks like me.

I do have questions.  When are the "badges" issued?  I mean, when can we put them in our signature spot?  And how exactly does one do that?  Did'n't know you'd get so many question right from the start did you? Embarrassed

Thanks again Bish!

Eagle, i knew i had forgotten something. I was going to mention the badges.

In most cases, you can host the badge on your sig as soon as you join. Now and again, a host will ask you not to host it until you have completed your build, but thats not often. Of course, if you don't complete your build, its just polite to not host the badge.Persoanlly, i don't put it on my sig until i have cpmpleted my build.I leave my badges in the larger size which then allows the members to shrink them as they see fit. And its always best to copy and paiste them onto your own computer. That way, if the host cleans out there PB account, you don't lose the badge.

A man after my own heart. I have already built 2 German Flak Panzers and i have 4 more in the stash. I also have all the 251 Flak versions.

nathan, good point. I am not a fan of the open ended GB's. I think it will work for the B-52 because of the nature of the kits, but generally they are best avoided.

Great post, Bish!

First of all, you are absolutely right about it beeing addictive!

It's great to have someone making some noise about those awesome GBs!

I think of starting one right now. I'm already working on the badge.

I think it will be the "Radial Engines Group Build 2013", I just need to set up a the dates of the start and the end of it. You fellas are invited to post suggestions on the dates.

I would love to see another p-47 GB, but everyone that wanted to build one did this already in last years GB, so the radial engine Theme will have to do.

Another Idea would be a "US Carrier Plane GB" or a "Flying Tanks Group Build" for every plane that could/can take a punch and keep flying after doing so.

Tell me what you think!

Cheers, Clemens

Clemens, the Radial GB idea is a good one. I might be able to squeeze in another Fw 190. I just got to be careful i don't over commit. I like the carrier idea, i am not sure if we had something similar, but if we did it would have been a few years ago. As for the Flying Tanks, sounds like a god idea, only problem is how you you determine whats in and what isn't. many people may have there own views on what aircraft could take damage and still keep going.

With flying tanks i was going for a group build where everyone could choose the aircraft they want to build, as long as had no big wooden parts, or other fragile components (rudders out of wood would be no problem, as they are relatively small parts)  and was sturdy enough to get some reputation (at least among the pilots that flew it) for that feature. It would be based on peoples own opinion, because it would be interesting to see what you folks would come up with.

But I guess I'll be going with one of the first two options.

What do you think?

The radial engine GB would have some interesting entries for sure (for example tanks or that russian aerosleds  with a radial at the back)

The carrier GB would have less variation in the entries, but that has its own pros, right?

Cheers, Clemens

I thought that might be the case with the badges.  I'm that way.....I haven't earned it until I'm finished!

I'll have to shoot you a list of what I have for AA kits.  You can give me a kit review if you have done any of them and give a suggestion for a good first AA kit to do.  Thanks for the great thread!

I have a nice 88mm FLAK lying around here (Dragon 1:35) for the AA group build.

Maybe I'll go and buy a Flakpanzer 38(t) or a "Kugelblitz" as well.

As far as halftracks go, two 251 should be enough...

As long as you make that pretty clear, the Flying tanks could well work. For the carrier, if you did want a wider selection, you could make it all carriers. But i think tehre enough US carrier aircraft to make it a good one. I have a couple if have been looking for the excuse to build.

My advice would be to start one and then maybe start the other half way through the first, or when it ends. As Mustang has said on another thread, its not as easy to run one as it might seems. At any one time over the next year, i will be running 4 at once. I may be biteing off more than i can chew, but it will be fun trying.

I know you have just joined a couple of GB's, i would get the hang of those, and be careful it can be easy to over commit, i know i have done that in the past. Complete the builds you have entered into these GB's, and then you will have a good grasp of them and start your own. There are a couple of GB;s coiming to an end July/August time. That should be just about perfect, giving you time to complete your current builds and then get your own GB up and running. maybe end of June.

Eagle, the two i have done are the Italeri Ostwind and the Dragon Kugelblitz (Clemans, thats a nice kit, even if it is an old one, and makes for an unsual subject) I still have to complete Dio's for those two, i am hopeing to do the Ostwind son.

2 251's, not a bad start. I am a big fan of the 251 and have a few in the stash. I imagiune the half Track GB will have a few of those.

Given whast on at the moment, Fw 190 and i am not sure if the P-47 is still running, i think i would go with the carrier. I think that will be something different.

That 253 is one i deffinatly want to get my hands on.

They have one left at my local hobby store Stick out tongue  Are 35€ ok for that kit?

Ok, carrier it will be (my entry still has a radial engine lol).

Isn't the Jug build over by now? Nevermind, I can still start the radial GB a little bit later Wink I'll just make a suggestion thread for it and host one, if there are more than 10 folks interested. Could you assist me a little bit with all of that stuff? (just a the beginning)

I'll search for some pics for a badge...

Hope to get an answer soon

I am on a self imposed bann for buying kits at the moment, i need to build some more first. Not sure how long the bann will last, its tough going. . I think i may have to look at my build scheduale and fit in one for the carrier. And sure, will be happy to help.

No worries Clemens. I am just going to post some pics of my current builds and i will have a look at them.

One other thing just came to my attention. This Sept is the 70th Anniversary of El Alamein. I am not in a position to do so, but a desert GB around this battle might be a nice idea.

Great thread, Bish! I think you got all the important stuff. I really like the sound of that "Americans in Britain" idea. I will have to see what I have that would fit.

Clemens, I also really like the carrier idea. There was an ongoing one here that was very successful, but I think everyone involved in it has gone away. So maybe it's time to hit that topic up again.

As I mentioned to Bish earlier, I would personally like to see another Russian themed GB for a few reasons. One being I love anything Russian, and as a result, half my stash is now Russian planes. But I have also noticed that most GB's with a Russian-ish theme tend to do pretty well.

Also going with that, I am hoping that Vance continues his "unsung" countries series. He hosted the Sweedish and French GB's which were both a lot of fun. Now I hear rumors of Canadian GB? That could be interesting. Anybody have more ideas for less-often-modeled countries that would make a good GB?

No russian stuff for me atm, I dont own any planes but my big Flanker. And I'm not ready at all for such a big chunk of plastic.

There would only be my IS-2 left for something russian, bit it is 80% finished so not usable at all in a GB.

Maybe I'll pick Tamiyas BT-7 up someday....

Joe, i know what you mean. I can se me getting drawn into more and more GB's, i can just help myself.

Anyone have the number for GB anonomous.

But, if it inspires me to get building, all the better.

Budd, while i may not go in for those little country GB's, i think they are a great idea. GB with 109's, 190's and Tiger's are all great, but we can't forget all the otehrs as well. And theres some kit there that you might not normally see. I have a few MiG's so i would be in on a Russian GB.

Hey Bish, when you find that number, send it my way......I'm starting to feel it myself! Stick out tongue

Here is what I have for AA:

Tamiya 88mm

Tamiya Mobelwagen

Academy Wirlbelwind

Tamiya 20mm FLAK 38

Italeri Sd.Kfz 10/4 with FLAK 30

I don't think I'm ready for the Italeri yet.  But out of the others, which would you say would be a good first kit to do?  Thanks Bish!

Thanks for this post Bish.

GB's are a great motivator, and I find I learn more about history because when a GB comes up that I have a incline to participate now I start researching a topic and then researching a kit in my price range.

Time to kick start the Canadian GB.......and I have an idea for Towed Artillery one later in the year.......

Then there's a weekend madness.......secret santa.......

This should be stickied so that it is easily found in this particular forum.  Lots of great answers to many common GB questions.

Bish, that halftrack build sounds pretty cool as does the AA. Just not sure which to sign up for.

Eagle, i did build the old tamiya 88 many years ago and its not a bad kit. I also built the Mobelwagen with the 4 20mm guns and that was nice as well. Unfortunatly i don't have these kits any more. So now i have both the Tamiya Mobelwagens in the stash and will be building the 3.7cm version. You can't go far wrong with a Tamiya kit. From your list, i would go for the 88mm or the Mobelwagen myself.

Chris, it will be nice to see that canadian GB get off the ground. I think we had a towed arty GB a few years ago, so it could well be timed for another one.

Eric, i have tried to spread out the two armour GB's but if people show interest in both, i may just put the halftrack GB back a couple of months. It would still fit within 2014 and it would give people time to commit to both as i know many guys will be interested  in both. So Jan 1st isn't a hard and fast start date.

Thanks G-J, i am glad people are finding it useful.

I am still kinda new to GB's and am only in my second one. Did the twin boom GB and am currently in FSM WW1 Aeroplane GB, which I am learning alot about a ropic I Never did before.

For the othe GB ideas I love them all and have a kit for each one. For the flying tank would an AH-64 Appache be appropriate? Have an SA-2 from Egypt for the duck hunter, and an F-4d skyray for the carrier.

An idea I had for a GB was transport aircraft. Basically anything that carries people or supplies, military or civilian.

And Bish you are right. GB's can be kind of addictive.
