Smith's Wirbelwind
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, November 18, 2003 8:30 PM
This is Hasegawa's 1/72 Wirbelwind. It was brush painted with Tamiya acrylics. These are old pics, and some of the problems have been corrected. It has gotten a wash, and the barrel on one of the flak guns has been repainted. The rest of the rear engine vents have been painted black (I have no idea why only one is black in that picture). This is my second completed 1/72 piece (the other being Hasegawa's Panther G). This was definately one of my more fun builds.

It's nice to see another AA Battery. Chris is right. It is quite impressive to see something so good from something so small. I mean I have also built 1/72 A/C and I appreciate the efforts that you 1/72 and 1/76 armor guys put on these babies.

Nice job.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I've also built a Panther, Sd.kfz 251, and a Flak 18, and I have a Tiger in whitewash coming, plus Dragon's Panther G in the mail.

Good work on something so small. I would have a heck of a time getting those small pieces together. Thanks for sharing, see ya in the Panther build.

SmithM, I like it..! If I may be critical though, I'd say you need to paint those tracks.. You have done really well with the sag over the return rollers but the silver of the tracks is a bit of an eyesore. It's not too late! Just mix red and black to get a very dark and dirty looking brown, mix that with some thinner (1/3 thinner 2/3 paint) then slap it over the tracks. This very thin paint should normally flow easily from your brush onto the most remote parts of th tracks. Once the paint is really dry, give it a wash of black paint (20% paint 80% thinner). Then once that is dry, give it a bit of drybrushing with a flat silver.

Also, for the guns (as well as the teeth of the drive srockets): take a pencil and rub the graphite over the metalic/unpainted parts. This will give you a better looking / more realistic finish.

I always find myself a bit envious of you that can do such fine work on such a little kit. Great job!

Nice work, Smith!
Another suggestion would be to drill out those barrels. As they are a focal point of this kit, I think it'd really make 'em stand out. It's not hard to do at all; just get a hand-held pinvice, and start with a .5mm bit. I'm not sure how big those barrels are, but you may want to go up to a .8mm bit to get the right size muzzle opening.

Good luck, and I look forward to seeing more of your mini masterpieces!

Fine work Smith!

I would also agree that the tracks need a coating of either flat or a bit of weathering (to take the shine off a bit)

I agree with the others that have put forward their critiques. A few minor touch ups and you will have a fine finish.

I'm another of the ham-handed modellers who look at these small kits with amazement at the jobs you can do.

Thanks Matt !!!
Happy Modelling and God Bless Robert

If I could make anything in 1/72 look that good I'd be happy! I see where you said you did some weathering after these pics were taken so I'm sure it looks really good now. Good work and keep them coming!!
