Panther group build submissions.
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, November 21, 2003 1:37 PM
With the start of our group build fast approaching I had better get this up.

Panther group builds submission guidelines.

1. send Email to highland_eagle68@sbcglobal.net
2. Put “Panther”, “group build”, or something similar in the subject line.
3. Name your pics to match your description! Use a name and sequential numbers like "username_pz5_01", "username_pz5_02", etc. and insert this name at the beginning of the paragraph describing the pic. Doing it this way will, hopefully, prevent two pics from different people from having the same name. Please use all lower case letters. When I upload the finished pages/pics file names are converted to all lower case and then I have to edit all the image names on the page.
4. If you use MS Word or similar it will be easier for me to cut and paste.
5. If you can Zip your files if you are sending a large group all at once. Some email accounts only allow "X" number of attachments to be sent at once.[

Geocities doesn't allow replacing an existing page with a new one of the same name (or I haven't found out how yet), the old must be deleted and then the new one uploaded.Angry [:(!] In light of this I will post pages when they have content instead of putting a blank page up as a "placeholder"

These guidelines are to help me do this quickly and accurately. I don’t want someone looking at a pic and saying “What is he talking about?” and I don’t want to look at something and say, “What is this about?” Tongue [:P]
There are a lot of us involved in this and I want to build too!Big Smile [:D]
I will try to update the web site when updates are available. I work second shift so I will check my e-mail in the late AM or early PM and again in the very early AM CST (GMT -6).

Questions, comments, and suggestions not only welcome but requested.

Thank you for your cooperation

Derek,
i don't think zipping jpgs does anything to reduce size.
the compression algorithm for images (embedded) is more efficient than current zip.
it does put them into easy to move packages however
(if i mail in say 8 pics at once).
in the case of single pics, it will actually make them slightly larger,
as it has to store the jpg, which it could not compress, plus some data on how to uncompress it!

Word docs (like all microft products) compress nicely
(being made mostly of air!) Big Smile [:D]

and thanks again for doing the heavy lifting w/ the web site!

Jon - probably the most common compression or zip program is WinZip. What it does is reduce the size of the file. Great for storage or for sending something rather large by e-mail. WinZip is shareware and can be downloaded from the net from about 1,000 different sites.

Ed is bang on the money re: compression of pics, doesn't do much good at all.

You guys are correct RE zipping images. JPEG and other formats have their own compression. For some reason I was thinking of DXF files.

RonUSMC put link to a real good program for pics. It's called irfanview. http://www.irfanview.com/

It can take a 400k pic and resize it to under 100k without really loseing quality. It's pretty simple to use and free.

Thanks for doing this for the group Derek.

Thanks again Derek. I will try and use the KISS principle as far as I can.

Mate, you will have some work ahead of you, just make sure you enjoy the build as much as we will. With the effort you have put in so far, and will need to put in in future, no-one will worry if you take your time updating the site.

Cheers.

Nope, It's just that geocities automatically converts all file names to lower case (case sensative). When I did the page and inserted the pics on my machine there were upper and lower case letters so once it was uploaded it couldn't find the pics so I had to edit all the image tags.
I didn't know that Geocities did this so it's my bad.
Not too big a deal really but with 20+ involved it could be a real pain later.

the second change was due to you mentioning that you can only do 10 attachments. I wanted to be sure others weren't caught by suprise.

I'm not sure if geocities changed, but I'm pretty sure they set some file transfer limit per some quantity of time. When the building begins we'll be seeing "this site has reached its transfer limit, try again in one hour" after one person views like 3 pictures.

Edit: Changes in red

Eric: Yep, just e-mail them to me.

I considered letting those that wanted to help a little just use FTP for their pages but Geocities wants more money to use FTP ("premium service"Dead [xx(]). Earthlink wasn't so greedy, they recommended FTP and even linked to a free FTP program that was really easy to use.

I would be interested in seeing that. That just seems wacky even for the Germans.

Unless you are not just clicking the quote link in the top right of the box of what you want to quote, I don't know.

I must have missed something... Where do we post the pics? Do we send them to Derek? If so, to what address? Or do we post them into Ron's gallery?

Sign - Ditto [#ditto] I don't see a way to attach anything either.

Derek, I just went out and checked the web page for the first time for a while. It's looking pretty well! Congratulations. I'm impressed with your work. I'm sure you've put a lot of time into it. (I'm going to cross a couple of threads here. Sorry.) I don't have any trouble reading the white letters, but I too think another color would be easier to read. Do you want me to send my list of build items to your e-mail or where? I'm going to include it below in case that's where you've been pulling the others, but I will e-mail it, too. Thanks, again, for all your hard work.

Bill

My items:

Tamiya 35065 Panther - old kit Late A
Armor Research 5003 - Corrected turret for the Tamiya Panther A (oop)
Armor Research 1006 - Engine Deck Vent Screens (Really nice!)
Armor Research 2029 - Panther and Jagdpanther Center Road Wheel Set
Jordi Rubio TG-10 - 7.5cm Kwk L/70 Aluminum Barrel
Moskit 35-04 - Jadgpanther Metal Exhaust Pipes

Bow [bow] Derek, just wanted to let you know your doing a heck of job keeping up with everyone and the whole build. Must be daunting. Hopefully, it won't impede your work.

To send Derek an email you can't do it through the e-mail link here in the thread (that's via FSM and they won't attach anything).

Send your submissions direct to Derek at his e-mail address by clicking on his e-mail link at the build site's first page (the page with everyone's names). Just click on the underscored 'e-mail' at the bottom left of the page or go direct to:
highland_eagle68@sbcglobal.net

Cheers

Thanks Peter, I'll add the addy to the first post.

wipw: post 'em here or email, doesn't matter.
How are those Moskit exhausts? I've been contemplating getting a set.

All: thanks for the complements/comments. I have a bit of alone time during the day so it isn't too hard to keep up and build so far. My editor, Arachnophilia, also makes a lot of the HTML coding easy.

A thanks goes to those who have submitted material so far. Everything has been very organized which makes it much easier. I download images directly to my working file and the text is pasted into the editor, then I add the image tags and breaks and then upload it lock, stock and barrel. Thumbs Up [tup]
