Stuart Honey ?
Posted by lizardqing on Saturday, November 22, 2003 7:05 PM
I decided to get a but of a start on the Acadamey M3 Stuart Honey and came across a few things I wanted to know before I got to far in. This is the first time I have done an Acadamy kit and on the drawings some parts are shaded but have no paint code or anything, so why are they shaded? Also this is the first interiour I have done. How much of it is white? Would the inside of the hatches also be white or the color of the outside? All in all this looks to be a very nice kit. Lots of tiny pieces though, might be wearing glasses by the time I get done with this one. As always thanks guys and I'm sure this won't be all the questions I have.

As you may have noticed from one of my posts, I too am building a stuart from academy, but mine is the M3A1. I have tried to do some research, and I have come to the conclusion that the inside of the drivers, and the assistant drivers hatches would be white. However, I am pretty sure that the turret hatch would have been painted the same color as the exterior. As far as the interior, it would be painted white. The fire extinguisher I would assume would be red, and the shells would be brass, the radio (I think) would be OD, the seats are black, and I think I remember reading that the main gun was painted OD on the inside.

This site might help, but you will find that the “honey” kit from academy has some faults with the interior.

Good luck with the build. You might also try a google search. I did this for my research, and found a plethora of “honey” pics. I’m sorry but I did not bookmark most of the sites. It did take me a while to find them, but they are out there if you look hard enough.

Thanks Edog. The interiour does look like like it would be lacking some by looking at the actaul pics of it in the instructions. Thanks for the site , I have searched some but did'nt really find anything helpful.

Could the shading indicate previously completed step? Just a WAG but maybe.

Chris,

I'm getting in on this late, sorry. But from what I've seen on the shading...

1st it is a bit confusing but I think that they use different shades on the same page to indicate different colors with only a few places labeled with the color. So, for instance, a very solid blue might mean black for everything shaded that way on the page, but would only be labeled in one or two places. A ligher blue could mean lt. grey, etc. And the same shade might not necessarily mean the same color on a different page.

Hope this helps.

Good luck. Liked the pics you have posted on the other thread.

Thanks Bill, I'll check and see if that might be it next time I work on it.

Just saw a special about Rommel on the discovery channel. There was a great clip of him posing on a knocked out British Stuart honey. The inside of the turret hatch was the same as the outside… Great idea for a dio?Big Smile [:D]

Yes, gloss white interior, black seats. The driver's entry hatch (on the front plate) is OD on the inside. Glacius hatches are white inside as stated earlier with black 'brow' pads. The voltage regulator on the engine compartment bulkhead is black. The radiators are gray. Wiring is gray or steel as the wiring is in braided conduit. The transmission can be either white or bare steel colored (I've seen them both ways, but suspect the bare steel color may be original). Instrument panel, white with black gages, silver gage trim and white numerals.
Turret hatch (as mentioned) is OD or exterior color. The main gun would be OD with a black breech block and white gun guard. (the Academy M3 gun guard is wrong, but it's right for the M3A1).
Chris, if you want to email me, I'll attach some interior shots of an M3 to you. I'll scan them after work this afternoon.

Boy Ron, looks like I'll be redoing the interior colors just about all around. Seems like I have the exact opposite on most of that. Looks like those pics would be helpful. And to think my wife always says I need to follow the instructions, look what these caused. Email is cmobley@firehousemail.com Thanks.

just a quick observation on that drivers hatch: I have seen wartime photos with the inside of that lower hatch painted white, and also OD. I think that will be up to yoy Lizardqing.

Cool thanks edog. Looks like it's OD since thats what it is now and would be hard to cover with white. at least thats one thing that can go either way.

Chirs,

Took a look at the M3 link. Thanks for posting the pics! I forgot to mention that a friend of mine, Brian Jensen took the one of our Stuart tooling along the road.

Ron.

Also, Edog is right about the driver's hatches. Kinda dumb having a white hatch open in any combat area!
