Marines M4 herman
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, November 23, 2003 8:58 PM
I am getting ready to start building this kit. But I am having trouble finding some good pics/reference sites. So if anyone has any good pics or good sites I can use for reference it would be very useful. Especially pictures of the Sherman with wood planks attached to side, I can't find any. Thanks in advance for anyone that helps.

Welcome to the FSM Asykr.

I assume you're referring to the Italeri M4 that they list as an M4A2 / A3 and so on.

You're best bet is to build the M4A3 version of the kit. Forget the M4A2 parts they include and commit them to the parts box, they don't include enough parts to do it right.

Finding references for the Marine Shermans on the net isn't an easy task, I'll look through some of the stuff I have here and see what I can find.

Here's a link to some completed models of the Marine Sherman at Tracklink.

Hope this helps a bit.

Just an off the wall question Robert but one of the USMC Sherms on that page from Iwa Jima has nails welded to it to keep satchel charges from being attached to the hatches. So how does that work, would'nt something be able to get caught on the nails? Yes, I'm still learnin alot of this.

Here's the link to the one I'm refering to:

I was wondering the same thing, maybe it was so the hatches couldn't be opened from outside. That way satchels can't be thrown in. Thats just a guess, can't wait to hear the real answer.

In order for the charges to work properly they needed to be in contact with the armour of the vehicle. So the nails created a space between the charge and the hull which somewhat effectively dissipated the effect of the blast. Same kind of idea with the timbers strapped to the side and on German vehicles the schurtzen.

After purchasing the Allied-Axis #8, I have been itching to do a Marine Sherman myself. I don’t want to post any pics from the book on the forum, but I can email them. I think there are 3 M4A2s, and one M4A3 with the planks attached. Drop me an email address and I will scan them at the computer lab and send them off to you as soon as I can. Sherm, would you like me to send you the pics too?

Sherm, yes I still have your email, and the pics are on the way.

Just a warning, the 4 pics took up 3300KB. I had to send them from my school account because hotmail could not handle the size. If this is too big for your accounts I will zip them. Sorry, I would have zipped them, but I do not actually know where winzip is on my computer. (ok, so I did a half hearted searchDisapprove [V]) Anyway, let me know either way, I want to make sure you guys get them.Wink [;)]

Ok Bill, i tried to send them zipped to you, and it did not work, your email account cannot handle it. I will send them one at a time. After you recieve the photo, save it to your hard drive, and delete it from your email account. email me when you have done this and i will send you the next one. (this has got to work!!)
