Sturmtiger ammo
Posted by Mixael on Thursday, December 11, 2008 6:41 PM

I have Tamiya Sturmtiger in the eraly stage of taking up space  on my desk, and I was wondering about the color for painting the 38cm ammo.  I don't know if anyone here knows this one, but thought I'd check.

 The rockets were painted a dark green, basically the same dark green that helmets and gas-mask canisters were painted. There is a white stripe painted around the center of gravity to indicate where the band of the hoist cable was to be positioned. White stenciling on the nose of the rocket, that you can just barely see next to the guy's hand, and bare metal fuse.

Forgot I had this;

The white stripe is missing, but trust me, it was there. I have several wartime B/W photos showing the stripe.

You posted the pic AFTER I had already painted the body of the rounds (a slightly different color than what the picture shows, but with computers, who knows right?).  I did a google search for the Sturmtiger, and found a b&w that did show the stripe, so I believe you.

I don't think this color plate is the exact color by any means. I painted mine a considerably darker shade than what this depicts.  I saw a 600mm Karl round at Koblenz painted in this color, it was a very dark green. I have a gas mask canister, which is also much darker than this image. I mainly posted it so you could see the stenciling.

Not me, but a good shot of the Karl round and the color.

Well it's possible to get exacting color on a computer monitor, BUT you have to spend the money and have the talent to setup and use a monitor calibration tool.  They are pricey.  Couple hundred bucks.  Being in photography I need to get one.  LOL.

I'm still trying to get ahold of a SINGLE Sturmtiger shell, to put into the barrel of mine.

One thing to keep in mind, while it is possible to get perfect exacting color on a computer monitor, the fact is, that the paint colors weren't perfectly stable, and weren't computer matched digitally to be perfect every time.  The colors on the real deal varied quite a bit in shade.  Yes there were specifications, but specifications are onyl as good as human error in mixing, and only as good as the perfection of the pigments and colors going into the mix.  There was a reasonable margin for error, so as long as you are "close" it's probably pretty accurate.

Ah, yes.  The lighting in this pic and at my desk are different, but the color I painted the ammo is closer to this pic.  I think that means I'll keep it that way.

Yeah, I know about the calibration tools, but can't justify them just to play games and stuff like that.  Maybe if I hadn't gotten married, I could, but my wife tries to keep me stationed in reality. Big Smile [:D]

And during WWII they probably weren't too concerned with having EXACT matches anyway.  I'm sure modern stuff has a margin of error (much closer tolerance than WWII era, but still...).

About the shell..are you referring to a kit?  If so, and it's 1/35, drop me a PM and I'd be more than happy to drop one in the mail to ya.  If it's for other than that, I can't.

I could probably get ahold of the real deal easier then I could a single individual scale one.  Come to think of it, I don't even need the whole thing.  Just the nose piece since the backend of it won't be seen, as it's going to be in the barrel.  But yes it's 35th scale I'm looking for.  PM sent in 2 minutes from now.
