Zimmerit info
Posted by djmodels1999 on Friday, December 5, 2003 5:56 AM
With so many involved in the Panther and Tiger Group Builds, I thought some may require info on Zimmerit. Nothing new, just stuff easily availanle on the net, but all the same quite informative...

And here's an article describing how to make your own on large scale models. Really simple and so much cheaper than PE..!

Another link to a page (in French, I'm sorry!) with pics of a couple different, maybe exotic' patterns!

Thanks much Domi for the links. I learned that zim was never intended for turrets. Can't understand the philosophy on that one! Would be wild to see that 251/D with zim. One question.......when it says Panther in generic terms, I asssume that ANY Panther will do. Finally, I had no idea Panther G's had so many different zims.

Eric, I assume so too... I have to admit that some of those patterns, I have never seen myself..! I'd like to see a pic of that SdKfz 251 with Zimm, though!
For the turrets, I can only think that whoever dreamed that thought that turrets were too high to reach... In a way, placing myself at the place of someone who had to stick mines onto tanks, the turret would have been the hardest place to reach alive!

Thanks DJ. That one page with the instructions for applying it to models makes it seem so simple that I may have to try it now. Doubt it will come out looking as good as that one in 3 easy steps though.

The main thing to remember with Milliput (and other epoxy putties) is to work small sections of a tank at a time...! Don't try to cover the whole tank in one go.. by the time you reach halfway in the process of applying your zimmerit pattern, the Milliput will be too hard to give you any decent result! Good luck.

I purchased already made Zimmerit for my Tamiya Panther A by Cavalier. I have not built the model yet, but the Zimmerit is very detailed.

Domi, I agree with you on placing a mine on a turret, especially a moving one, and a moving tank no less. Black Eye [B)]

Mark, I heard Cavalier makes some mean zim, any chance you could send a photo of what you have? Maybe, I could weasel out of puttying. Big Smile [:D]

Tigerman, I would love to do that for you, but I do not have a digital camera. You can go to www.greatmodels.com They do have some pictures of the Cavalier Zimmerit. The set of Cavalier I got is for a Dragon/Italeri models. The Tamiya kit little bigger than the set, so I will have to add some putty to make Zimmerit to cover the exposed plastic. I really like the detail.

Here's a picture of a 251 with zim. http://www.panzerdiesel.com/data/e/27sdkfz251d.html I knew I had seen it somewhere. (seems they don't allow direct linking)
