frosty's ersatz m10 progress report UPDATE
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, December 8, 2003 9:15 AM
Hi gang !

we had a nice snowstorm over the weekend in this neck of the woods...
i was feeling kind of poorly when i got home on friday, put on my 'jammies & stayed in 'em & in bed all weekend w/ the flu.Sad [:(]

the good news is that i was still able to work on my project ! Big Smile [:D]
(doesn't take 2 much energy to handle a razor saw, thank goodness !)

so in between coughs & sniffles, i managed 2:

cut off rear stowage bins & clean up edges w/ file
install 1/2 round where glacis plate meets bow plate
install additional spacers on glacis
cut and install false glacis plate
cut and install blanking panels where stowage boxes were removed
cut & install framing for the new back plate
cut the new back plate (won't install it until after i assemble the exhausts, tho')
cut, shape & install false differential covers ( i thought these would b hard 2 make, but i cut a couple of sections of styrene rod & filed 'em 2 shape, no big !)

i'll try & post some pix soon...

Sometimes it's actually kinda fun to be kinda sick...
Did you put on a movie or two also... Kelly's Heroes?

Keep this up frosty and you'll have to brag on the Resolutions thread about getting one thing off your list.

wow frosty, you must have been sick. You typed your post with complete words rather than the frosty shorthand. Although I think you were just looking for an excuse to stay in and build all weekend.....Wink [;)]

Hope you feel better, and lets see the finished project. BTW, you still owe us a pic of your completed Pink Panther don't you?

Hey folks !
first, a great big THANX for all the 'get well' wishes !
feeling a bit better today... otherwise nothing 2 report. i had 2 look after my sibs last nite, mom was out at a meeting so i did bedtime stories & lights out. Smile [:)] fun, but no modeling time 'cause i went to bed soon after !

Ron P:
no Kelly's Heroes, but i did watch a documentary on Pearl Harbor on the History Channel. lotsa planes & ships, very little armor...
i felt strangely unsatisfied, for some reason...Wink [;)]

Cassibill:
i'll just b happy if i can cross 1 item off the list ! (but only if it turns out well,
a girl has 2 have some standards, rite ?)Wink [;)]

Duke Maddog:
looking forward 2 more BMP pix, ur doing a great job with a kit that seems 2 have its issues... fight on, comrade ! Smile [:)]

Mike:
LOL !!!
as 4 me wanting 2 stay in bed, i'd rather have been out snowboarding...
missed some excellent powder, majorly bummed ! Sad [:(]
and i have some updated shots of the pink Panther, it's about 85 to 90% done, still want 2 add radio antenna & spare trax stowage bracket up front & need 2 do final coats of paint & weathering...
will upload as soon as i get 2 'puter w/ usb port again !

best wishes 2 all, & happy modeling !

Frosty.

Maybe you became a little too Frosty this time. Hope you're feeling better now. At least you didn't get frostbite, that really would impinge on your building time! Looking forward to some pics.

update:
first, i'm feeling much better now, and thanks yet again 4 the get well wishes !
second, a huge THANK YOU for Domi 4 taking the time to send me that info on the ersatz. it will really help with the next phase of the project, when i do the turret add-on armor plates... i'm still dreading those compound angles !
i did some work last nite, mostly to the rear :
added the blanking to top of rear deck
added the little trapezoid wedges to fill in the sides so that the false back plate will be just about vertical instead of having the characteristic slope
i was looking at my differential covers & i think i need 2 do a little more
sanding just to make 'em more symmetrical, but they really turned out better than i expected.
sorry 2 post w/o pix...

OK, here's the report from the shop...

added more putty to the joint between the false glacis & half-round
cut & added the little hatch that covers the machine gun
cut templates for the turret armor sides
put together the main gun

i've been having a little battle w/ the side skirts...
first time they were thin enough, but too long & i couldn't file the thin sheet styrene in place so i pulled 'em off
( they were just tacked on, no big...)

then i used some strip styrene... perfect length but too thick in cross section and the trax wouldn't fit inside the sponsons... not to mention that the skirts now were parallel 2 the slope of the hull instead of plumb
so i pulled 'em off again

last nite i redid the styrene strip mounts 4 the side skirts & cut a template 4 the skirts themselves... but i'm still not totally happy.

the main problem is the front end of the skirts, it curves down below the main horizontal edge so i can't just use a piece of strip exactly the rite height... i'm having trouble getting the curved lower edge smooth & the main horizontal lower edge cut evenly.

i think the template will help, but i'm open 2 any suggestions !

hi folks !
i'm kinda bummed that nobody had any ideas re: side skirts...Sad [:(] oh well...
did some more work on the ersatz last weekend :
sanding the turret top & glacis/bow plate join
recut flat hatch 'cause i couldn't find the one i cut before...Sad [:(]
added hinge detail 2 hatch
scratchbuilt exhaust pipes from brass tube
painted trax, road wheels, idler wheels & drive sprockets dk. green
painted lower hull dk. yellow
found the package of stirrup steps i lost Smile [:)]
(need 2 add a step 2 bow plate at some point)

i'm hoping 2 upload some pix tomorrow, really !
does anyone know if RonUSMC's gallery is working again, or should i try 2 post on the dedicated site ?
i'm gonna need help posting pix, most likely, if i need 2 post 2 the cronuswarp site....
sorry, i'm majorly IT-challenged... Sad [:(]

Frosty,

good to see that the project is advancing. Re. Ron's gallery, I uploaded pics yesterday, by loggin in on page 2 or 3, rather than from page 1, where there's some kind of bug...

About the skirts, don't worry too much, I too sometimes have to start a scratch part several times over..! If you fail, give it another day and try again. Sometimes it's all it takes!

I'd like to help with ideas on the skirts but unfortunately I need a visual reference. I know how it is when parts don't fit well.

Looking forward to seeing your updated photos, and congrats on your progress. You are tackling a job I would be afraid to try. Fight on!
