Vision blocks and thermal sights?
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, December 11, 2003 11:09 AM
Quick Question. I've noticed in the photos of alot of armor builds that people have applied some sort of mirrored or reflective tape to the vision blocks and thermal sight units. What is this stuff and where can I get my hands on some. Thanks for your help.

There's a couple ways I've done it.
1. Paint the vision block gloss black.
2. Paint the block flat black and then cover with Micro Krystal Kleer. This adds a little depth.
3. Use black acetate film cut to size and attached with white glue. I did this on an AFV Club Scimitar with tremendous results.

For sights or periscopes (like the Marder III), I paint the periscope lens opening with Testors chrome silver, and when dry, cover it with a small drop of Tamiya or Gunze clear green acrylic paint.

This stuff almost looks like it's some kind of mirrored tape.(Doesn't appear to be painted)Looks good though. If I knew how to attach a picture I'd show you. LOL

Go to a party supply store. They have all sorts of colored mylar tape and ribbons that modelers are using as a cheap source of the mirrored anti-laser coating. Also if you cut out the portions of photo negatives, you can use that as well.

The Major has it right.

You can find all sorts of stuff at craft stores (if you can get past that nasty candle perfume....Dead [xx(]).

I assume you're talking about the laser protected vision blocks that look anything from black to almost salmon pink, depending on how the light is hitting them. When I was in a rush I did use black paint on one or two and flesh tones on others... It looked pretty good.

Also, if I remember correctly, the sights on the M60A3 (passive) looked different, mirror finish, than the M1's TTS (thermal).

you have to have the picture uploaded on the internet (try RonUSMC's gallery that he made for us forumers.) then you copy the url of the picture and put it between these tags

(without the spaces in the middle of the tags and it will put the pic here example using my sdkfz 251

and when i remove the spaces in the tags.... voila!!!!

I use mylar..it comes in many colors..I'm using gold mylar for my sights and blocks on a M1A2. Mylar is easy to find anywhere that sells wrapping paper.

I've been wondering that same question for a while now. Thanks for the ideas. My wife is always in those craft stores with her hobbies, I've found some pretty decent materials for my own use when she drags me along.

I wonder if what you've is "Bare Metal Foil". You can get it mail order from micromart.com, or about any other internet hobby supplier, I'd think. Also, many hobby shops carry it.

Good luck.
