Been a lot of articles in FSM on this. Any smooth finish putty can be used, the trick is to do a small area at a time and let it dry. If you try to do a large area, the putty will dry before you can finish it and it will crumble. I will confess that I find Zimmerit tedious. Anyway, have research material to determine the right pattern, since different vehicles used different patterns. Experiment on scrap plastic with different putties and tools. Spread the putty thin, and try anything from a straight pin in a pin vise, an X-Acto blade, the back of a blade, a serrated metal glue spreader from a shoe repair kit or a vinyl repair kit, an aftermarket spreader, or whatever works best for you.

If you look over here to the left side of this column and click on techniques under the "Browse-by-subject" when the next window comes up, click on on techniques again in the draw down column. It will bring you to another page with alot of different techniques. Go down about 8 subjects, there is one article that has 6 different ways to apply zimmerit from the May 2002 issue. It is very informative and should help you out alot. I myself like to use a soldering iron to make my zimmerit. I have just recently started to use putty, but am still in the experiment stage. But this article is just what you need for any questions that you may have. I hope this helps. Chris.
