Armor on "Band of Brothers"
Posted by crossracer on Saturday, March 1, 2003 5:57 PM
Ok, i'm working my way thru this series from HBO and i'm really impressed with the tanks. First the shermans and british cromwell4 look great. Very nicely done. It's the German stuff that blows your doors off. First they have a Jadg-Panther that, if it isn't the real thing, i'm stumped. They have a Tiger based on a, what looks like to me, a hetzer/swedish S-tank chasis. THe half tracks are perfect for both sides, the germans have regular, and 75mm armed ones. But my prize to best over all is the Stug. III they have. It fooled me for a bit. I'm not sure of the chasis only that it uses rubber chervon pads with a front drive. THe Mallet is a early trianglar one. In short it looks great. Have you all seen it, what do you think??? Happy Bill

In regards to the armour used..I do know a couple of the answers.
The Stug is based on the chassis of a British A.P.C. (sorry forget which one)
The Tiger a T34
The American Halftrack is the real thing
The German Halftrack is a post-war production from an Eastern European country (also forget which country....bad memory)
The Shermans are Canadian M4A1 Grizzleys (note the tracks...Canadian Dry Pin)
The Cromwell is the real thing (I think)
Sorry ...I'm unsure of the Jagdpanther (again possibly T34 chassis)

They did some good research on these vehicles to give them the right look.
Happy Modelling and God Bless Robert

i have the series taped i'm glad i did beacuse not only is it very accurate but i now have some great ideas for dioramas. I was very impressd with the armor used even the 88 gun. anything that even involes stephen spielburg is bound to be very authentic. By the way dont hold me to this but in the part titled "replacements" i believe there is a marder III or a elfant i'm not sure tho

It is good to see that Film companies are finaly putting the right looking stuff in films and not use army surpluse stuff with a black cross painted on it. I wasn't too sure about the crappy Sherman's coming in at the end of one of the early battles and destroying all the German tanks, that didn't seem to realistic to me. But maybe I'm biased to German amoure LOL.

The German halftracks are Czech I think.

I have the DVD collection of the mini-series, and I remember it had a thing on the armor in it. I'll watch it and see if it says anything about what they used. As for the Shermans killing the German tanks at the end of the part called "Carentan" If you watch closly I don't think they took out those tanks. The half tracks were slaughtered but the tanks pulled back. The only german tank taken out was by a bazooka.

Ya that episode at Bastone was awesome. I loved that whole series, the film makers (Speilberg, Hanks) pay close attention to the historical accuracy of their projects. My hats off to them. Another of my favorate parts was the jump into Normandy and Op. Market Garden. Those were beutifuly done.

For Crossracer, on the HBO website, there was a "the making of" band of brothers, they showed what tanks were used, how they converted them etc.

Guys, the Jagdpanther is real. I believe its one from one of the British collections. The kraut halftracks are OT-810s from Czechoslovakia. There is an original Marder in there too. Good call on the Shermans with the dry pin tracks! As for the StuG, I was wondering what it was. It just looked too tall to be an original, but it was damn good!

The Tiger I used the T-34/85 chasis, such as the Tigers in "Saving Private Ryan" and "Kelly's Heros".

Wasn't a T-55 chassis used as the base for a conversion to a Tiger? In an issue of Military Machines (sorry, I can't think of the exact issue at the moment) they had a picture of a T-55 converted into a Tiger at a museum in England. I'll have to look for the issue when I get home.
