OK, Ed, I finally got a chance to catch my breath and look long and carefully at your tires.  I say they are perfect as is.  As you know, it's really easy, and tempting, to keep going once you get an effect you like.  I think for a dry dusty envrionment, they look real, and that's the best complimen I have for any model.

I envisioned darker tire color on the sidewalls and raised portions of the tread, with lighter colors in the recesses, but I have been looking at dirty tires (instead of muddy tires, which we usualy associate with European vehicles) and those seem dead on to me.

My vote, for what it's worth, is leave the tires and move on.  AS you said, you can always let it stew for a week and then come back and do something more.

I sense  talking behind the scenes here...as in what the He** is Indy talking about. No big deal either way but  that's not what I was suggesting at all Bill. I was saying  just give the rubber a little dryed-out look with some lighter grey(not darker, the dark color is there) But..  now I see they have gotten a dusting of dust color so maybe nevermind    anyhooo.... not my tires are theyWhistling [:-^]     Edmund, thanks for the fillet recipe, sounds killer, I've been cookin my tators like that for years(slice potato into silverdollar slices, add pats'o'butter inbetween with onion slices*optional, roll/fold up and grill 40-50 minutes--and they are jum jum

Hi Indy.

Actually, we were talking behind the scenes, but your ears weren't burning because of us.  I told Ed how I did the puny BA-20 tires.  I tried to pack "dirt" in the recesses, and scrub it off the raised portions and sidewalls, trying to emulate the "It was REALLY dirty before, but I drove it a while on the road" look you see on 4 wheelers.  I got a nice two tone look that I though would look good on Ed's sand rail.

Telephonically, I had coached Ed to try this on those sexy well-molded tires, but having looked at the "overall" dusty look, it looks correct for a desert environment rather than the muddy environment I was putting the BA-20 in.  I don't think they would show a 2 tone, but would rather be fairly dusty all over.

Long explanation, but I like to keep the air clear.  No sense in you having/getting the wrong idea.

We talk about you, but it's along the lines of "Did you SEE Indy's Kubelwagon?@?!"

NICE....no harm no foul, Bill.  What did you use for the "mud" you packed in those tires? Got a link?

In a nifty trick I call "hypocrasy", I guess I didn't mention exactly what I did in my WIP, despite my professed preference for show and tell in WIPS.

I mixed up some Mig pigments, if I recall, Europe dust, Russian soil, and dried mud, I was going for a dark brown with a hint of red, and since the subject was Russian, I HAD to put in some Russian soil, even though it is basically black.  I put it in a little cup and mixed it, then took a makeup application thingy, foam rather than a Q-tip, and ground it onto the tires, mostly in the tread and depressions.  Then I took the M1A1 thumb and simply rubbed the sidewalls and the high spots of the treads, taking off most of the dark pigment, leaving it where it would be after the mud dried and wore off the rest of the tires.  The whole process was done "dry", no thinner, water or pigment fixer was used.  It worked, but I think it would work a lot better if the detail in the tires was better.

If you look at this WIP, I painted the tires at the top of page 5, by the end of page 6, you can see I have done mud/dirt on the tires.  (Yes, it's sitting on the base you walked me through before my first contest.)

Thanks Rick, Andy and everyone else that has been so gracious and supportive during  this build.  It is really appreciated and makes a traditionally solitary activity a communal one which is awesome!

This will be my first Thanksgiving on the Forum and I have a trremendous amount to be grateful for including the friendships and support that I have received from you guys!!

Happy Thanksgiving Eve to everyone and don't forget to set up your DVR's for Tanksgiving on the Military Channel.  I save the recorded files off on my Ipod so I can watch then when everyone else is watching football!  Phooey!!!  I have also been reading Panzer Leader by German General Heinz Guderian and it a phenomenal read!

Build Update:

I finished painting the stowage today.  I used Vallejo paints and Mig productions Neutral Wash for all the shadowing.

Here are some real world refrences and then my interpretation:

Dave & Eric for your last comments and I hope you had a great Holiday!

Build Update:

I started on the figures but I had to sit back and think about my approach becasue I have only painted Northern Europeans so far and I had never painted an Italian figure before.  Commonsense indicated that I should approch it a little different which I did.  I base coated all the heads and exposed flesh with a Vallejo Cork Brown and Dark Sand mix leaning more heavily towards the cork brown.  I basecoated everything wth 3-4 very light coats.

I then mixed up an oil wash of Burnt Sienna and Cadmium Red Medium for the shadows and to provide a flesh red tint.  I then lightedned the base coat and applied highlights to the face.

I painted my least favortite head for practice concentrating on flesh tones and colors.

Here's is how it ended up.

No worries Marc I am just updating as I go and thanks for watching my my friend.

I stayed up way too late last night working onthe driver figure.  My research on Italian uniforms and colors has been interesting.  I am not modeling an amputee contrary to the pictures.  His other arm is molded around the steering wheel which I am detailing and weathering today.

I dropped one of the figures wouldn't you know it and broke off his index finger.  My wife caught me on my knees looking for it and laughed her a$$ off when I told her what I was doing. The indginity of it all!  Sigh [sigh]  I did find it which was even more surreal and the reatchement procedure went well with no complications and the patient is expected tohave a full recovery.

Here are a few pics and I used Valleyo paints with Mig Neutral Wash for shadows which works great on these colors IMHO

Edmund,

This is amazing.  You may not "have that many kits" under your belt , however, your skills have grown exponentially.  It is nice to see figures on a kit as it gives a relative scale.  The tires on this vehicle (the 1:1 version) were huge!

I feel your pain about the laughing incident.  My wife will come out to the garage and see me perfoming the same ritual of snatching the errant piece from the jaws of the floor monster.  If I find it she says "I don't know how you can find anything that small on the floor" (it's amazing the drive to find something when you would rather not have to scratch it).  If I don't find it she says, "You're going to have to scratch it aren't you?".  This second question is answered by a groan, a few muttered expletives, and ultimately "Yes".

Make sure you check your patient every hour for the first 72 hours to make sure there is no neuromuscular compromise. Laugh [(-D].

This build is always a delight to see new postings.

Cheers

Dave

Nice to hear the lost digit was recovered and reattached without incident Edmund! There's some kind of modelling-law that states the smaller or more fragile a piece is, the exponential likelihood it will break at some point and/or fall to the carpet! My wife has seen me do the "modellers prayer" routine quite a bit but never laughs at me while doing it so I'm spared that at least!

Figures are really coming together for this one for sure. Thumbs Up [tup]

Thanks Dave & Bill for the kind words and to be fair to my wife she at first volunteered to help but when I seriously told her what I was looking for she lost it!  Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

I think my patient is now addicticted to pain killers so I know that's normal American medical recovery so that's on track and 5 by 5!

Best figs to date, Edmund, fitting since this is your best vehicle yet, too.  I have a lost part story, for you when we talk.  Looking fantastic, though.

Very nice looking fig Edmund, and glad to hear the paitent is recovering well. I think we've all been there at one time or other, my wife just shakes her head and gives me that look. The dogs think I'm nuts because I usually check them first since they lie at my feet in the hobby room.

Looking forward to seeing the rest of the crew painted.
