The Sturmgeschuetze were very widely used for infantry support as well, especially the 10.5 cm howitzer armed version. SGs were much cheaper to produce than turreted tanks, and used existing production lines for the Pzkw III andIV. They were used in all the European theaters, particularly during the long retreats on the Eastern Front and in Italy and France. Many German units had more SGs than tanks.

the first sturmgeschutz or StuG III Ausf.A was put into production in Jan '40 for the closing stages of the french campaign. The final variant and most common was the Ausf.G started production in '42. Motorized artillary battalions were the first to have this tank. It later went into its widest use with the panzer and panzer grenadier divisions at the end of '43 through the end of the war. The russian campaign would make an ideal setting for a StuG III diaroma. There was also a StuG IV based on the PzKpfw IV chassis.
