I'm new at modeling but for my stug iv, i took a razor blade and while holding it at a slanted angle, chipped off little pieces on the schurzen so it looked like some shells glazed off of it and etc. hope this helps.

Schurzen were not going to stop AP shells, they were intended to defeat shaped-charge weapons like the Bazooka and PIAT by detonating the warhead away from the armor and degrading the focused jet of molten metal such weapons produce. I suspect that .50 caliber AP would probably hole schurzen. It does look like they snagged on obstacles and brush and such, and were loosely hung in any case.

If the Panther you're building is a Dragon's with individual track-link, the side
armors should better be left out, so as to show the fine slope of the tracks, and
in case of Dragon's Panthers 2002 release, show the arresting hooks as well !.
This is what my modeler decided to do when I gave Dragon's Panther A Early Type
released in 2002 for him to model. And of all the Panthers he has modelled so far,
this new one, in sand color, is the most beautiful :

Now he's working on another Panther, a Dragon's Panther D, also released in
2002 and will have it shown in a diorama.
