Disgusted with Dragon's Stug III, alternatives?
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, December 28, 2003 8:29 PM
I paid a pretty penny for this wreck of a model. The details suck, the instructions are strictly from the Stone Ages, all in all a wasted effort (esp. the individual tracks, yuck!)

So I'm looking for alternatives and ran across these two, anyone know anything about the company that makes them, OAO Zvezda?

I know (generally) russian stuff is hit or miss, but I built a Luchs from ICM, and the detail (as well as the instructions) were wonderful!

In any case, looking for a Stug III that's not made by Dragon (DML), suggestions?

My vote for a Stug III that's not DML would be the new tool Tamiya early Stug III G.

I have no experience with the Eastern European kits of the Stug III, but from my previous experience with these kits, I doubt that they are superior to the DML offering.

I have Tamiya early Stug III, it's retooled and is a great kit out of the box.

The Tamiya Stug is good. I am sorry to hear you had a bad time with the Dragon kit.
Good luck on a future Stug other than the Dragon kit LOL.

Hi AttackDonut,
Tamiya has two Stug III kits. An older (1970's, I think) kit, #35014 and the newer kit, #35197.
I'm sure the newer kit is much better.
Regards,
Joe

The newer Tamiya StuG III is superior to the older one. I've got both, but let my 13 year old build the old one. Absolutely no relationship between the two kits, the new one is a completely new kit.

I had a friend do the DML StuG III Ausf. C and he thought it was a nice kit. I thought it looked excellent:

Several of the guys in my club have built DML stug 3's and say they are not so bad. In fact, one of the guys won the gold medal at the last QHME comp here in Australia for his stug, although he used replacement metal winterketten tracks on that one.

I,ve got Dragons Stug III F and apart from a couple of minor warps and large awkward mold gates I think its pretty good.
I especially like the inclusion of PE grill covers.Big Smile [:D]Cool [8D]

I have the Stug III G late, which do you have. I know the tracks can be daunting, especially on PZ III's and PZ IV's. So many pieces. It looks nice in the box.

I've got the winter StuG, with the extra wide tracks. It's not even the tracks that tick me off so much (though I detest individual track links) it's the fact the parts don't fit well and the instructions are vague at best, and at worst downright wrong.

I bought the russian kit I mentioned off eBay, we'll see how it goes. I have another kit from them I bought on sale from a local hobby shop, and the quality looks great. We'll see how it builds.
