ace model kits and all small scale builders
Posted by GA.modelmaker on Monday, December 29, 2003 10:48 AM
just curios has any one built any of these kits? i normally build 1/35 scale but a guy has a couple of pieces of amor in 1/72 and is at a good priece too. i have found conversions for these two piceses of amor in 1/35 that i want over on aef design but with a price tag at that. so for all your small scale builders whats the ups and downs in building in that scale and are they pretty accurate?

Honestly, I would not start small scale AFVs with ACE kits, but if you have experience with short-run kits, then why not. There is a lot of flash to clean up and fit is often problematic... However, their subjects are very original, and that's what attracts me to those kits.

I only bought one, a command variant of the BMP-1 and was not pleased. I traded it off and have avoided them since. I did pick up an IS-2MT armored tow tractor by PST. It was on sale for $5 and I was impressed with what was inside. I since found Alanger on eBay and have bought 3 more PST kits from them. They haven't arrived yet, but should be here soon. I bought the T-54, T-55 and a KV-1. Hopefully they will be nice kits.

I have been building these Ace kits for some time now. I just started my fifth one: a T-55 Enigma tank. If you want to see how they look, check out my WIP Thread:

http://www.finescale.com/fsm/community/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=12077

It shows some of what you can expect from an ACE kit.

I also have a few other WIP Threads I'm gonna post too.

Bottom line, if you are relatively skilled at small scale armor already, you'll be okay with these ACE kits. If not, I'd cut my teeth on Revell of Germany and PST kits. Both companies put out excellent kits with no flash that go together smoothly and tightly, and make outstanding finished models. I just started a PST Panzer 738 tank recently. I'll have pics up later.

Ron, they are excellent kits! You will be very pleased! I have built all three and they have gone together like a dream. Too bad PST doesn't do the same subjects that ACE does!

Enjoy your build. I'll try to post pics for you if you want. Lemme know.
