US Armor Vehicle Desert Color
Posted by gpal on Saturday, January 2, 2010 3:31 PM

Hello,

I pretty much just use Tamiya acrylic bottle paints for airbrushing  and would like to know what Tamiya color(s) match the US armor color in Iraq the best.

Thanks, George

Buff is WAY too light and too pinkish, it's meant more for skintones really.  Testors Model Master Acryl line has a U.S. Marines desert sand color.  Tamiya's Desert sand is pretty close. I have used both.

It depends on the time period really. The Model Master "Armor Sand" is more appropriate for the Desert Storm period, but is too dark and too brown for OIF and post-OIF.

What you want is roughly equivalent to FS 33531 - Model Master "Sand (Can't remember the number), Humbrol 121 "Light Stone" or Gunze Aqueous Hobby Color H-313 "Yellow"  Tamiya Buff is close, but a little brown. What you want is somewhere between Buff and Deck Tan.

Ok....first for cross matching paints here is a great website

Next I agree with Phil. You can get the ODS Sand in MM Acryl.

From the program above it recommends Tamiya XF59 Desert Yellow or MM Acryl 4720 Sand
