Laxman is correct on doing it with wire.I think that he left out somethings that will make it better.Do the bottom the same way to simulate roots.,but don't make them too long. Also, after you shape it the way that you want it, dip it into plaster, let it dry, then repeat untill you get the desired thickness and texture. This way it will look like a tree instead of wire. ;)

This is an easy way to make branches. Take speaker wire and pull the wires to make it look like branches and etc. Paint it the appropiate brown color and put the branch ends in white glue, but make sure to leave the center clear. Then take parsley flakes or whatever you wish and dip the branch into a pile of it. After letting it dry, use a flat coat and your done. All this takes close to 30 min. and it looks great too.

An easy way is to pick up small twigs and stems from your yard, and glue etched leaves or railroad model scale foliage or ground up bits of dyed sponge or pillow stuffing material for leaves. A model railroad shop is a good place to find diorama and groundwork items.
