IDF M1 Sherman 76mm -- Done - Pics --
Posted by HeavyArty on Sunday, February 21, 2010 10:24 PM

Here is an IDF M1 Sherman 76mm from the '67 War in the area of Jerusalem. I have combined the HVSS suspension, early turret with small loader's hatch, and fenders from the Dragon M4A3E8 "Thunderbolt VII" kit with the hull from the Dragon M4A1 Op Cobra kit to build it. I added MB Models indi-link T80 tracks and modified some of them by cutting the ends off AFV Club T97 (M48/M60) spare tracks with stays to be T80 spare tracks.  I also added various stowage from the spares box and tied it all down with some ship's rigging string.

Here she is:

Thanks guys, it was a fun build.  The IDF sand is a good diversion from OD and NATO camo every once in a while.  I really like the look of the M4A1 w/HVSS suspension.  The wide tracks just make it look more menacing.

Gino,

I like the color and tone you used.  What did you use for a base color?  I particularly like the frontal pic.... it looks like someone brought a thug to a knife fight.

Cheers

Dave

Thanks Dave.  The base color was a spray can of Krylon Khaki (Beige) gloss, striaght out of the can.  I think it represents the IDF mid-60's sand color well.  I then washed it with a couple different shades of brown and sand.

Beautiful model Gino, I can see it in the news footage of the times. Great subject choice, I went through a phase of building IDF armour as a younger person and I do remember always wanting a really good M51. In the 1980's such a thing did not exist and the suspension was also non existant. I do remember doing a 76mm myself but had to do it as a straight Italeri kit with verlinden decals.

Again a beautiful Sherman.

Terry.

I used the spray can.  It wasn't too bad to control it.  I sprayed a couple thin coats first, then a final, heavier coat to cover fully without too much build-up.
