Tamiya German 88mm Gun
Posted by MartianGundamModeler on Tuesday, January 6, 2004 12:49 AM
My local Hobby Lobby has German 88mm gun [I do not recall the official designation] on clearance [approx. $16] and on the front of the box it displays the cannon, troops, and trailer [there may also be a motor bike but I'm not sure]. However on the side of the box there is also a small unarmoured half-track displayed with a driver and seated troops with what looks like a canvas top displayed. Is this half-track also included in the kit with the .88mm gun? Since most of the script is in Japanese I can't tell whether it is in the box or whether the half-track is just another separate kit which is compatable with the 88mm gun pictured. I'm not big on artillery but if it includes a half track and troops [and may be a the motor cycle] I'm definately going to pick this one up for the cheap!

The halftrack is sold as a separate kit(biggish item), both the halftrack and the 88mm gun get re-issued at times.

I can't remember if the kit included the Motorbike too(don't think so), I got mine with a few extras when I build it (Kuebelwagen, Halftrack and a 1/48 storch to suspend over the Dio)

I did a 1/35 scale version of the old Hasegawa 1/72 Diorama of said piece.

Either way it is a fairly nice kit considering it's age.
[edit]
Just checked with Hobby Link Japan the kit INCLUDES 1 laison rider with
Zuendapp KS 750. Sells on HLJ for $20.

Here is a link to the halftrack:

I can remember quite a few years ago Tamyia released the 88mm complete with crew, half track and motor bike within one kit, I beleive that it was a special release. Since then I have only seen the 88mm with crew in a box by itself, I think that the bike is still part of the kit.
I actually purchased the kit here in Aust. Sad [:(]Sad [:(]Unfortunately this was one of the kits that went missing during one of my many moves.Sad [:(]Sad [:(]
Wayne I enjoy getting older, especially when I consider the alternative.

MGM: It must be the re-released kit of the 88. It is now manufactured by Tamiya here in the Philippines. It does include the 88 (with options for ground mount or with the carriage installed); 12 crew (I am not sure) with one on a motorbike.
The transporter shown is not included with the kit. It sells for $12 here.

Yeh MGM, The motorbike and rider (well actually he is standing holding the handle bar and seat loop) comes with the kit. It's and older Tamiya moulding and could do with some detailing, but still builds up nicely OOB. You get the option to make an AA gun or AT gun virtue of the different length counterweights.

Figures are usual old Tamiya stiff poses and inaccurate breadbags, mask cannisters etc, but what the hey, a gun needs a crew. I recently acquired one cheap here and the mould still looks flash free. Go on get it, you won't ever regret buying a cheaper kit, but you may regret not buying it.

WHAOH![:0] Only 12 bucks! Here in Tennessee [USA] you can expect to pay anywhere from $34 to $39 bucks for most tamiya kits even the small ones like the Humvee and M-20/M-8 armoured cars. The regular price on this 88mm gun i beleive was $27. The only Tamiya kit i have ever seen for less than $20 around here are the Ford Mutt and Willys Jeeps. I think the British quad gun tractor WITH cannon sells for about $24.

I recieved the Flak 88 in a trade recently. A friend got me the Eduard PE set for it and a Jordi Rubio barrel. He thought it was funny that I had never built the kit before. Looks to be an interesting project.

For the kits age it's quite good. I built my first one when I was 12!

And, it's the only game in town for a plastic 88 in 1/35.

Maybe Tamiya will retool this one too?

Maybe Tamiya will also issue a Pak43 88mm with the "low" trailer?

Are you listening Tamiya?!

Not bad for an older Tamiya kit. True it is the only game in town, except AFV released a new Pak 88 version.

$16.00 dollars is a very good price. I remember seeing the 88 model ina old Tamiya catalog in the 80's. The 88 was set up for as a anti-tank and had a half track with all of it's compartments open and the crew was working to set up every thing. It was a pretty good diorama.

MartianGundamModeler;
Just saw the 88mm kit today in one of the local hobby shops, don't know if this will help but the kit number was 35017, it contains the 88mm gun, crew and motor bike but no half track. I believe this is a re-release of the earlier kit.

I built it about 2 or 3 months ago, it's actually a fun kit to build, it comes with the motorcycle, 6 or 7 figures, and the trolleys for the gun (2) it was fairly easy to build, the only thing is that it has lots of very small parts so be prepared for that, and the halftrack is separate, however it will hook to a hanomag 251/1 nicely

Rob, I know little grey space aliens that have built the Tamiya Flak 88! Alien [alien] Ok, little green ones. It's such a wonderful old kit, of a really handsome gun.

I'm tempted to get the Verlinded 120mm scale one just to scare the kids, but I'd never build the damn thing. Notice that no one else has done the gun in 1/35th. No need to. This thing is still a great kit.

MGM.

On the Carriers you got drums onto which you are supposed to wind some vinyl tubing(steel cable??), I think that the supplied tubing is too thick and should be replaced with thinner one.

Tamiya is "well known" for putting too big tubing and wiring with their Kits.

Considering the kit was issued in 1974, it holds up real well. I've built several over the years, and it does benefit from either AM detail sets or scratchbuilt detailing. BTW: The vinyl tubing on those reels is supposed to represent cables used to hook the gun up to a radar-control center, which needless to say would not have happened in far-off battlefields. Radar controlled rangefinding was used in more-or-less permanent emplacements in Germany, France and the Netherlands. Also radar control was a feature of the Flak 37 more often than the Flak 36. The guns were usually emplaced in squares, four to a battery, with a radar-relay post in the center of the square, with the cables leading out to the guns. 88mm guns used for anti-tank roles usually had the cable reels removed, or they were just not repaired when they were damaged. Also, an emplaced AA gun would generally not have a shield.

not sure if it is 'bad form' to link to this site,
but there is quite a bit of flak info here:

No the halftrack is not included, the motorcycle is included, all figures, rounds, spent rounds, ammo boxes, parts for flak 36 and 37, spare weapons, rubber tires, decals for multiple fronts, excellent refference items in the instructions, and the list goes on and on, its an excellent kit. I have built it twice.

Just finishing up the 88 right now. Its a pretty good kit and like a others have said it shows very well.

I have the Tamiya Sdkfz 7 (8ton) halftrack that was used to tow it. I bought it 12 years ago before I got out of the hobby and have just been recently builiding it too. It needs some detailing so I am thinking about getting a PE kit to detail it. The tracks are a mess though and if I can find replacements I will.

Fruilmodel makes tracks for the Sdkfz7. I also think Model Kasten does too.

I'd use the Fruil ones. They are metal. Nothing looks as real as metal tracks!

Yes, ModelKasten does make tracks for the Sdkfz 7; the set includes corrected roadwheels and a white metal sprocket. A little steep at $35 but worth it! The tracks are workable and have a good "sag" when added to the chassis. The Fruill tracks are good too, but I think for the same money the MK tracks are a better value.

Hi all,

Been searching ALL OVER Brisbane for a Tamiya 88 kit, finally found one in the local ToyWorld on New Years Day believe it or not!

Just looking through it now... No. 35017, 2 variants of the gun possible, 9 figures, one motorbike, and those trailer 'thingos' (not sure what to call them actually) you can mount the gun on for transport.

I think the box art is probably showing the diorama possibilities more than anything else, regarding the half-track that is - perhaps which other kits are most compatible with this model. Not quite sure what kind of setting I'll build around it yet... some kind of thick, wooded camoflage I'm thinking.

Can't wait to hook into this one! Just gotta finish my Pak 35/36 and I'm away!

Cheers,

M

P.S. Some great images of the real gun in action in the instructions too!

It comes with the 88mm, figures, motorcycle but not the FAMO to transport it. It is a pretty good kit
