Not even sure how to ask this (troop related question)
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, January 6, 2004 10:18 PM
This is probably the wrong place for it, but it's the closest I could find (mods, delete if need be)

I am trying to find out the ranks of Army men in WW2, according to their countries. I can't google for it because I'm not sure how to phrase the search qurestion.

I know the US Army had "private" "Corporal" "Seargant" "Captain", duuno what else (or in what order) and I'd like also to know the allies and axis equivalents.

Help?Question [?]

Hey Attackdonut....
I'll give you the ranks starting with captain.

German, Allied
Hauptmann, Captain
Oberleutnant, Lieutenant
Leutnant, 2nd Lieutenant
Stabsfeldwebel/Hauptfeldwebel/Oberfeldwebel/Feldwebel/Unterfeldwebel, Various ranks Serjeant
Unteroffizier Oberjager, Section Corporal
Stabsgefreitier/Obergefreitier/Gefrietier, various ranks corporal
Obersoldat/Oberschutze/Obergrenadier/Oberfusilier, Private
Schutz Grenadier/Fusilier/Jager, Private

The germans based some of their ranks on years served.
i.e. Obergefreitier was a section command member with 6 years total service
A Gefreitier had 6 months total service.

Hope this is a start.

Mike

German Officers of the General Staff and lower to Major.

Reichsmarschall
Generalfeldmarschall
Generaloberst
General der Infantire, Gebirgstruppe
Generalleutnant
Generalmajor
Oberst, = Colonel
Oberstleutnant = Lt. Colonel
Major

As for picturing them here, that would be a big undertaking. Simply because they were very involved and there were lots of them. Personaly I think they got a little carried away with some fo the designators but its easy to say retrospectively.

I think the big thing would be the branch colors or piping. Thats pretty important. The epaulletes were covered or reversed most of the time in the field for security reasons because they had divisional markings.

the other designators were pretty involved. Collar badges, shoulder badges, sleeve markings, hat markings, pins, ribbons etc.
