BOY AM I IN TROUBLE!!
Posted by nmayhew on Wednesday, January 7, 2004 3:43 AM
hi guysSmile [:)],
what with the hoiday festivities and allSmile [:)], and their resulting impact on our financesDisapprove [V], my other half - "she who must be obeyed"[:0]Black Eye [B)]Tongue [:P] - decided that it would be prudent to review our monthly outgoings, seeing where any savings might be made.
"sounds a good idea" i said, not knowing what was in store for me when i got home from work!![:0]
with bank statements being waved in face as evidence, i was asked (interrogated?) if i knew how much i was spending on our beloved hobby per month...thinking quickly, i came up with the brilliant response of "...errr, not sure..."Tongue [:P] (i'm good under pressure you see!)
it turns out that i have been spending equivalent to 1/3 of my monthly mortgage repayments each month, and boy did i get it!!Black Eye [B)]Black Eye [B)]Black Eye [B)]
as a result there is now an embargo on evil-bayEvil [}:)] and hannants, my 2 main sources...Disapprove [V]Disapprove [V]Disapprove [V]
i thought it was not a good time, therefore, to ask if i could buy some AFV Club tracks for m Vc firefly in the sherman group-build!Black Eye [B)]Tongue [:P]
oh well...my only hope is that i persuade her to join the hobby and begin building the p-51 that i bought her for xmas!!Smile [:)]Smile [:)]Smile [:)]
anyone else with any similar tales? i'd love to hear them!
regards,
nick
Kind regards, Nicholas

When my wife gets out of the hospital and sees that I picked up some new dragon marines and some extra add ons for my Bradley and some other goodies, she's gonna kill me! ( I think I spent around 200,00 euro)

My Wife just looks at me whenever I come home with a new kit and shakes her head.

At the moment I am a bit limited space and timewise on finishing Kits and am looking forward to the new apartment where I can get a dedicated modelling corner and a roof balcony. Big Smile [:D]
Having 3 well-stocked HS within 300 meters from the apartment and plenty of other HS within a 15min. train ride don't make it easy NOT to buy new kits.

But than I think she gave up when i brought in kit no. 150 some time ago as everytime she pointed out my pile of Kits I pointed out her pile of cut-cloth in the other corner.

I always check to see if it is ok to buy a new kit. If we have the money there is no problem...... she would let me have what ever I wanted..... I got a cool wife Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

My wife is pretty cool about it all. She has her hobbies and I have mine (which run about 10 times more in cost than hers!)... I just use my 'Guard' pay for my hobbies and she doesn't care. She also used her extra income for hers. That way, our main sources of income go for the big expenses (mortgage, food, bills, wine, cheese, trips to far corners of the world, etc...).
I DO have to watch my spending though! Went on a buying spree last year that was VERY expensive, blew my account down to about zip... got a lot of fun stuff though!

I got a great wife , shes got a well paid occupation - I'm retired!
She's got an expensive hobby - two Horses, four cats and a spotty dawg (The dawgs actually mine)! So whatever I spend, as long as it's outa my pension is OK by her!
PS. She is Swedish so mabe that makes a difference?

My wife has no idea on how much I spend because we do not share the same bank account. On top of that she says that she prefers me spending in plastic pieces that in some other chop of meat...

I am only limited by the the little bit of room I have in my closet that isn't taken up by other stuff. and it is slowly becoming full!!! but I should have enough that I don't have to buy any till late spring. but unlike everyone else, I do not have a girlfriend or a wife, just a mother. Wink [;)]

here's a hint to foil those audits. if you use a debit card, don't pay with it, just get cash and use that, and shred all those receipts from the LHS!!!Big Smile [:D]Wink [;)]

Hey our women get to indulge on themselves, don't they? I figure if wifey can get her nails done or a new pair of shoes....she sure as heck can't give me the eye if I order something online or walk through the door with something in a bag. To her credit, she gives me no grief.

Mine is very ....well I won't say supportive ... but she does let me get away with blowing my hobby budget out of the water every one in a while. As long as the bills are all paid and I leave a little in the account, she allows me my whims.
Happy Modelling and God Bless Robert

I have to agree with 7thCavScout!!!

I'm temporarily assigned away from home and pointed out that a kit costs $30 bucks and it takes two weeks (on average) to finish and that the same amount of money goes out of your pocket just as fast, but with more frequency, at the bar when I'm not working on a model. Plus in the end I have something to show for it!

Just don't mention to her that I still run to the bar everynow and then too!

I feel your pain my brothers !!!!!Disapprove [V] I remember I was once faced with a choice given to me by my now ex wife to choose between hobbies , I play guitar (which actually brought in extra income at one point!), flyfish , and my modeling hobby ( which negates money ) SO...... I just got rid of her ! Big Smile [:D] problem solved !Wink [;)] And got myself a girlfrined that likes to do the same type of things as I do !

M1abramsRules, don't exclude yourself.. I am 26 and I still hear it from my dear mom. Its unfortunant that she works at the bank I use and watches my account almost constantly. More often than not the ink on the check isn't dry before she calls me and want to know what I wrote it for................uh.........Big Smile [:D]Grocerys.....! My old GF wasn't really aware of my hobby then and so she really didn't ask why we always ended up eating out at sonic and renting a movie off the dollar rack... She just though I was poorTongue [:P] Not too far off I might add... I wish they'd make sams choice brand workable tracks....Big Smile [:D]
Anyway... great thread ya'll

Ahhh the on going battle between the sexes. I get the rolled up eyes when I pick up a new kit or assy. But then I go to the closet and point out the shoe store we have in there and there is peace once again. Laugh [(-D]Laugh [(-D]Laugh [(-D]

This thread is a stitch. Yes, I too am sometimes a 'stealth' buyer... The boxes just show up in the UPS truck with no prior warning!
And, Yes Eric, being single is nice, but being married is much better especially...Tongue [:P],... well, 'nuff said.[:0].
It's cool to hear that most of us have pretty darned forgiving wives! Also, you can't count going to get nails done and hair done as part of their expenses... to them, it's a necessity (and some of them really do need that make-up!)Wink [;)][:0]Black Eye [B)] after all, the do it for US (?).
Well, that box from Squadron should be coming to my door tonight or tomorrow night also (unless it's misdirected to Frotsy's)! Another Stealth delivery for the Sherman Family Build!Big Smile [:D]Big Smile [:D]Big Smile [:D]

Ah well, my wife and I came to an agreement when I got retrenched last July. She said to me.....'You've nearly killed yourself for 24 years working in that place. You don't need to go back to all that pressure right now. How about you take some time off, look after Cameron (our then 3 year old son) and I'll go back to work. You can relax, read your books, do some of the millions of models in the cupboard....'

We all but paid off our only debt ,the mortgage, worked out our budget to finish off the house (gardens, driveway, etc on an acreage property does not come cheap!), etc. Then she went out and bought me a new Aztek airbrush and let me buy a new compressor.

We are still on a tight budget, as she only works part time at the moment, but she doesn't begrudge the odd little purchase. I show my gratitude by not going crazy at the LHS and only getting what I need or what I want that is a real bargain.

For a married man, it can't get any better than that, can it?

I try to use the the same thing they tell us " but hunny it was on sale". Usually works except for the quad 50 halftrack I brought home the other day and she told me that it was the one she wanted to build.

Oh man can I relate to all of these.... My first wife (relax, there were only two) was never prepared for dedication to a hobby on my level, and then when I started competing a substance hit the fan which can't be mentioned in polite company. Needless to say I used the same arguments: I could be spending the money on alcohol, drugs, gambling or other women, and besides, when I'm in a big project you always know where I am, etc...
My second (and last) wife was a bit more complacent about it. Well, "complacent" isn't exactly the word. "Bored" might be better. "Utterly disinterested" fits, too. She was indifferent to the whole thing; advantageous, you might say. At least she didn't bug me about the money. But geez, can you at least say something about the Best-Of-Show trophy I just brought home? I worked hard for that! Sigh [sigh]
Being single means I get to spend all the money I want without an argument, but it also means no one shares in the occasional small triumphs.

Well, I get in and search around the net and decide what to get. Head out to the store on the weekend, buy more than I intended and decide to sneek it into the house. Then by the time I get home, I feel so guilty about it, I go ahead and tell her what I bought. Sometimes I take the heat, sometimes not. But I'm just too flaming honest, I guess.
