Tamiya's M1A2 Abrams (First look)
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, January 7, 2004 9:05 AM
Here is the scoop on the new kit:

Well written instructions (as always) 16 pages long. 5 of those are for placement of the accessories and decal placement.

Versions that can be built are:
2nd Platoon, F Co. 2nd Batt, 3rd Arm Calv Reg. (Iraq)

4th Platoon, F Co. 2nd Batt, 3rd Arm Calv Reg. (Iraq)

2nd Platoon, C Co. 3rd Batt, 69th Arm Reg, 1st Brigade, 3rd Infantry Div.(Iraq)

2nd Platoon, B Co. 2nd Marine Tank Batt. 1st Marine Div, 1st Marine Exp. Force (Iraq)

2nd Platoon, A Co. 1st Batt, 77th Arm Reg, 2nd Brigade, 1st Infantry Div (Kosovo)

All parts are of Tamiya quality (no flash whatsoever)

Here is a close-up of the tracks:

Here are sprues, of the added extras, to the kit. Bed rolls, backpacks, headgear, ammo boxes (large and small), gas cans, water cans, 2 figures, etc. Also included are parts for 2 different types of smoke dischargers. Reading the instructions, there are 4 different ways to construct the Cupolas and hatches. More extras included: extra sprocket gears, wheels, and CIP indicators (Flat and louvered).

Contained in the clear parts are 2 water bottles (they even included decals for the bottles. Hard to tell which brand of water though):

No, your eyes didn't deceive you, that IS a dog!

Without actually constructing it, I would say it's a pretty good kit. I did build the Tamiya M1A1 last year and the additions I bought (in an extra PE set), are now included in this version. I'm sure some are missing, as I am not an expert on more Modern Armor. Looks to be a fun one to build!

I would give this kit a rating of 4 out of 5 Tigers Wink [;)]

Looks like Tamiya threw in one of the sprues from their Modern Accy Kit and also did a little retooling on the original sprue that carrys the driver and hatch parts. Does the kit include the new gunner's sight?

Oh sure... a DOG, but no Interior!... Looks great though, doesn't it? (the kit, not the dog).

What, yours didn't come with the full interior? Hmmm...must be a domestic Japanese market thing...

JUST KIDDIN'!!!

The ones here ain't got it either...but they are are selling sprues and trax separately for some reason.

Enjoy happy M1 life!

I've got the Dragon M1A2 already but I think having the Tamiya one is no problem.

Can't wait until they issue it here.

No 5th Tiger because I didn't actually do any construction on it yet.

As for cost, I payed $25.00 plus shipping for the kit (gotta love contacts overseas) I am now awaiting the arrival of my DML / Dragon King Tiger Porsche.

I also got a heads up, about Dragon releasing a Marine M4A2 "Iwo Jima" Sherman!

I picked one up yesterday at the LHS. It is a good looking kit as per Tamiya's usual. Now are they going to do the AAVP7 with new markings and stuff? That's about all I need for a full compliment of OIF AFV's.

Gotta admit most of the heavy armor doesn't turn me on much but THIS I have to have! I have a birthday coming up hopfully I can con the missus into getting me one. If not may have find other means of "aquiring" through a rerouting of budget spending. (Works for the government why not me?Big Smile [:D]) hopefull my armour modeling skills will have improved enough by then to do it justice!

People who know more about this tank than I do (and that's virtually everyone) say that the hull has some problems for an M1A2. True or false?

I got one for $35 (including shipping) from a dude in HK. It looks terrific to my eyes. I may build it over the winter of 05. Can this model be built as an M1A1 for the first Gulf War? If so, what needs to be done? The panels need to be left off, right? Anything else other than the normal M1A1 stuff per the instructions?

I'm reading Rick Atkinson's book Crusade now so I am all fired up to do an M1A1 for 1991. I understand this kit is a lot better than the "official" Tamiya M1A1.
