SAS Land Rover "Pink Panther"

One question in regards to the above Kit.

What colour would you recommend to paint said Item in it's british colour scheme (green), the instructions are vague and I think Tamiya gives only the appr. colour from within their range.

I fished mine out last night and looked at a few points for improving it (headlight and search light lens repalcements).

Noooonooonooo! Its not a jeep! (Land Rover purist speaking here..)

Seriously though.. If the Pink Panthers weren't painted pink they were bronze green.. I think its Revell (enamel) colour 66 or 67.. The more green one of the two. One is greyer than the other. My own 1:1 ex British army Land Rover is overall Nato green, which is exactly the same as the Tamiya one. And as these Landies were used until into the 80's, this might also be an idea. If you need any detail info, just give me a shout.

Michaelvk.

Thanks for the info.

I have found a few pics of it in the green, looks like also what was where attached differed quiet a bit from the Kit.

Might need a bit of scratchbuilding to get it too look like soe of those pics I got.

I might come back to your offer for additional info as I need it.

Thanks, again.

MMF, just a quickie...the Tamiya kit only comes with sand type tyres. Either paint it pink, or replace the tyres (if anyone does them).

Will see, got a few ideas to hide those thingies. Big Smile [:D]
From what i have seen on pics the sides of the tires were also painted pink.

Sorry, I prefer the odd kits and schemes, after having pics of it in green i decided that this is what I want.

Not too much into authenticity, rather go for the overall impact of the finished Item. Maybe that is why I dabble in all the genres and am no expert in any..

Yeah there's always mud but remeber to do something with the spare as well.

Re: the painted tyres. The tyre walls were painted pink as a disruptive camo. Apparently the regular black circle outline of a tyre can be seen quite easily in the desert. Check out some of the Brit equipment in the recent Gulf tussle and you will see they still paint the tyre walls in this rough patterned way.

Same here I dabble in everything as well. I just won TWO pink panthers on e-bay by accident over the weekend!LOL One was a new kit with only one bid which I won and the other was partial build [of which I was the only bidder] which I only bid on becaise I didn't think i would win the other one. They haven't arrived yet. Ibid on these kits because I just baught the SAS Italeri "Commando Jeep" so I says to me self "Might as well get me a 'pinkie' ". I love the odd vehicles too. That is why I am starting a collection of support vehicles and armored cars. Does anyone one know the "true" story behind the pink color?

Yup. Crashed aircraft story. They lost the plane because it was painted pink. They Brits thought it would contrast against the sand colour. They were proven wrong when they had to send out a search party. A patrol finally found it several months after. Hence why all Brit desert vehicles since were painted pink. This includes AC.

I just realized something..

On the rear axle of the Tamiya kit, the Land Rover has an EMV (or is that EML? I forget the right letter right now..) differential. This is most likely not accurate because this make of differential is very rare, and in the event of the Land Rover having this diff, then it would have been replaced/refitted with the far sturdier Salisbury differential.. This diff is sustantially 'meatier' than the EMV diff and much preferred by the armed forces. The front differential, a Rover differential, is the same on all series 2, 2A and 3 88's and 109's (including 109 and 110 Forward Control models. I'm a bit hazy on the 101's..), except for the 1 tonne series 3 109's, which have Salisbury diff's front and rear.

Just so you know..

By the way, I have a Salisbury (so should Gregers..) on my Landy if you want photo material.
