Paladin support question?
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, January 9, 2004 1:50 PM
What vehicles are being used in Iraq to support the Paladins with munitions? Is the Army still using the FASV or Hemtts ?

M992A2 FAASV are used to resupply the vehicles in combat. HEMTTs as well as PLS would be used as well.

What a ride! What a life saver! What a weapons system! We use the FAASV in the field (they provide perimeter support when not resupplying, the Paladin is virtually blind when in a mission) and supply them from the PLS at an ammo point in the rear.
Well, off to work on them (Paladins) this weekend!

Next question, is anyone out there making a FAASV in 1/35th or am I goning to have to bend some styrene over a Paladin chassis? I looked around today but so far haven't found one.

Pathfinder,

yep you'll probably be making one, I've been planning on it but I really haven't done much on it as I can't speak enough german to explain to the LHS what I want ( as far as materials ) . I can get you all the pics you want of them and maybe some dimmensions?
I do have some pics of them on Rons site in the refference section in the armor profile and it has a picture of one to show the cluster of pics.

From what I've been able to get off the FT. Hood sitet is that the chassis (hull for the hardcore) comes from the M-109 with a fabricated shelterin place ofthe turret. The real trick should be scratch building the charge, projectile racks, and if you really get ambitious the telescoping jib rig (hoist) for direct loading into the Paladin. At least I think my assumotions are right on the chassis. Isure would appreciate any dimensional info or pics if you could E-mail to me Redleg.

most of us don't use those conveyers we usually take them out and the only thing you'll see of them on the inside is the place where they are mounted leave an empty hole.
You are right about the M109 lower chassis, you'll have your hands full if you make an ammo rack ( the vehicle holds 96 rounds [ complete rounds , shell, fuse, powders {there are two charges in the long skinny cannisters called green bag and there is one in the short cannister called a white bag}, there are a few other types of propellant but there would be to much to go into.....)

what the cat does is called close but seperate this is for example take your gun they are firing at point A and the cat is just for example 20 meters or less off doing security then the gun needs ammo the cat will pull over and open the side hatch and have a few guys help out so it goes faster, they'll upload the gun with the new ammo by hand right from the cat then go back to pulling security.

here's a link to the page I mentioned before, I'll try to get some more pics up of them, I know the ones on here aren't all that great so.........

THanks Redleg! I really appreciate it. I'd really like to get a little dio done before the Pensacola thing this year. I've got an article on an old Verlinden Mag. from 1997 where the modeller used an Italeri M-110 and a M548 for supply. Desert terrain would obviously be a little easier than Reforger 88 scenery.

a really cool dio would be a pls reloading a cat and another cat uploading the gun (that would be a large but cool dio ) , man wiuld that be a fun build!
sometimes you might see the pls's come in almost to the firing point to resupply the battery and the cats would go over to get ammo and also a refueler would tag along and juice everyone up as well.

just some more ideas to throw at ya.

And next to the PLS could be the dunnage pile... maybe a porta-pottie... a 'Humvee'.

IF you do build a FAASV, the hull is extended beyond the back plate location on the Paladin, isn't it? So that would have to be taken into account also so it doesn't look like a minivan or something... And yes, an inerior would be tricky but with those big ol' doors, at least a partial one is needed!

yeah, it does extend over the back a bit, and where the spades would mount up at, the mount is different (longer and kinda skinny ) , it's just used for adding tow shackles instead of the spades.

ron, the good ol' classic porta pottie, god I l;ove those things (hahahaha yeah with my pro mask on ! ).

I've been looking for a FAASV for quite sometime and have been unable to find one in 1/35! Found several in other scales but not what I want. I have a whole platoon of Paladins just waiting for a re-supply......

thanks for the congrats sir,
that most've taken some time for a platoon of guns, that's something I've been planning on making as well. I want to finnish with a fe more guns then maybe make a few cats and throw them in a goose egg somewhere? Maybe throw in a lil' FDC track and some guys sleeping on the FDC track?

Uwe Reichling,
yes oshkosh trucks make the PLS, it's a support truck that has a load handling systemon the back of it, works like this: it has a large 2 stage arm ( 2 stage Ithink , it's been a while ) that will flip back over the end of the truck and it has a hook on it so it can grab a flat rack (which also has a hook ) and pull it up over the back of the truck, if you scroll up you can see the truck and imagine how it would work.
