Hello from Germany *Now with pics!*
Posted by Geist on Monday, July 19, 2010 1:34 PM

Hey all. Been awhile since I've posted anything. Had a crazy beginning of summer and now I'm in Germany on vacation. I'm up north in Bremen. I'll cut to the chase here, I'll be headed to the Deutsches Panzermuseum Tuesday or Wednesday! I'll be getting pictures of everything there so don't worry.If you guys want anything specific let me know.

I've also learned that von Manstein's grave is in a villiage called Dorfmark near Fallingbostel that's on the way to the museum. I want to visit it but I can't seem to find the graves location within the town. Anyone privy to this info?

He is buried in "Cemetry of Dorfmark", beside his son;

Father;

Son;

If I have the correct place, I think it can be seen from both Rennbahn & Freidhof.

The tanks are probably locked up but it would be great if you were able to take some interior photos of the fighting compartments.

You didn't hear that he was permanently banned and sent to the firing squad today? Long live Manny!

You're a lucky-ducky for getting to go to the museum. Have a great time on your vacation.

If it's that Manstein you are looking for, his place of rest is just opposite the Long Stand!

I missed this when I was stationed there in 1997. Looks like some good tanks for the Heer (I hate when people refer to the German Army in World War II as the "Wehrmacht") and Bundeswehr.

Thanks guys. I think I've narrowed down the location of his grave to a general area in Dorfmark.

I leave for the museum in the morning. I'll get some teaser pics up when I get back but don't expect many until I get back to the states. I'll try to kep this thread updated. Thanks for looking.

Hey again. The museum was awesome. If any of you find yourselves in Germany the museum is a must see for any WWII or modern armor fan. There was a pretty even number of each era. If any of you were expecting Tiger pics it was unfortunantly not present. I belive I heard it was being worked on. Anyway, here are some teaser pics. I wish I could have gotten more detailed pics of modern stuff but my camera battery was dying shortly after I got to the modern stuff and then promptly died.

leopard 1 on a rail car

Prototype Kanonejagdpanzer

The replica A7V.

Pz III M

RSO. I'm realy happy this was there. I don't have any excuses for not getting the new Dragon kit.

Su 100

That's all I have time for right now. Look out for more later. Enjoy!

Nice Pics Erik,thanks for the posts.

How does an Isreali Merkava end up in a German museum ?

I was wondering the same thing but my guess is that an Isreali museum wanted something from Munster's collection and they traded.

Here are some more teaser pics. I'm going to try to get a list of vehicles that I have detail pictures of and post here so you guys can request anything you need.

Like asked above try and get some interior pictures of the popular WWII vehicles. Visit the museum during a slow time & ask the person with the most authority to do so. Explain why you want the interior pictures & offer to even remove your shoes as to not scuff the finish of the vehicle. One open hatch with the camera reached inside without going in would be enough. They may even arrange a after hours visit for you to do this, also note this forum is world wide & will help promote their facility.

Good luck! Toast

Please excuse my armor ignorance but what is the small siege cannon / huge mortar type thing? It's pretty interesting whatever it is;

It's a Sturmtiger based on the Tiger I chassis. It's a rocket propelled mortar originally designed for the Kriegsmarine.

I was able to get some interior pics on the tanks that had opened hatches but they were few and far between.

It is a 38cm RW61 Strummorser. It fires a 38 cm rocket assisted shell. The small holes around the main tube are to vent the exhaust gases forward, which I suppose also helps recoil. 18 where made between August and December 1944. Used mainly in the defence of the homeland. This from the Encyclopedia of German Tanks of WWII.

Part 1 of my detail pics.

Su 100

Next up will be a T34 mod 43. I'll get the Soviet stuff out of the way first since there were only 2 from WWII and the rest was Cold. Unfortunantly my camera died shortly after I got to the Cold war stuff.

Nice rusty tracks on the SU-100. Having seen a T-34/85 up close, I thought it rather smallish and imagine that the crews quarters were quite tight, much like most Soviet tanks of the period and even today compared to our modern armor.

I was surprised on how small the Su 100 was. It has an incredibly low profile and I would have felt pretty good serving in it due to that fact. There is not much for a German gunner to sight in on I don't think.

Here are the detail pics of the museum's T-34 mod 43.

I was really happy they had the driver hatch open. Looking straight in.

Looking up.

Looking in to the right.

In to the left.

For some reason I didn't get an overall pic of the T-34.Oops

Next up will be the Pz III M.

For some reason the pictures are not coming out. All I see is a blue photobuket box.

Glad to hear you made it back to the States in one piece Erik and looks like you had a good time at the museum (the pics that can be seen of course, sorry to hear about the bandwidth throttling!). Beer

You need to delete some old stuff Erik. The Panzer III is one of my favorites.

I have, and it does no good. My account has pretty much been suspended for a month because I tried to link too many pics.

Anyone know somewhere I can host pics for free? Preferably with unlimited bandwidth?Wink

Thanks for the pics.

Just out of curiosity,do any of the vehicles still run?

Yup, some of these vehicles are in running condition, for example the Pz.I and - as far as I know - the Panther. Also lot of the smaller vehicles like motorcycles, Kübelwagen and so on.
