A lazy Panther-maker's observations
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, January 12, 2004 8:28 AM
So my build of the Panther Early A continues. Got a lot of work done over the weekend, but with all the aftermarket crap it's taking forever! Here are a few questions and observations for y'all.

1) I'm currently building all the tool clips for my Panther out of the Eduard photoetch fret for the Panther A, and because I am lazy, I'd rather just buy aftermarket tools for panzers than shave all the crap off of the kit pieces that's required when you use the fancy-pants etch tool attachments. (It would also be nice if they were a little closer to scale than the plastic pieces.) Any suggestions?

2) Speaking of scale, have any of you guys noticed that sometimes photoetch is a bad thing? Sometimes the stuff is just too skinny. (I mean, beside the obvious "flat" effect of etched MG belts and ship crewmen.) Example: There's that piece of metal that goes on the cuploa of a Panther, right where the hatch hinge is, which seems like a rest for the commander's hatch when it is swung over, though I'm not totally sure what it is. Tongue [:P] I dutifully replaced the thick kit part with the little etch part, having made all the required bends. Now I look at my phot sources and that piece of metal seems to be rather thicker than the etch piece -- and frankly the same goes for the MG ring, which seems a bit to skinny, as this was a fairly thick piece of metal. Are we just making life too difficult for ourselves with the etch, for no good reason?

3) You know those tubes that the tools are attached to on the tank -- the hollow tubes that the tools get slid over, then attached with a little metal bar that is attached to the hull by a chain? The tubes come flat in the Eduard etch set. You have to roll them yourselves. Any suggestions on what size rod I should use to roll these things? I plan a trip to my train shop to get the right rod, but am not sure what size it should be.

4) Wiking Panthers are never portrayed with the AA MG attached to the mount during the period in which they used the early A. However, I have ordered one of the nice brass MG-34's, and I also built up the little ammo box for the MG that's on the Eduard PE. Goddammit, I wanna use the MG! What's your thoughts on that? Should I skip the gun and go accurate, or add it for visual effect of the cool gun and nifty ammo box?

Lazy Pantherman, over and out!

Larry,
i think some of the PE stuff is not very good for representing 3 dimensional objects.
(except where you fold up a box)
you are right, it is too thin or 'flat'.

on the MG, i would say if you want it on, put it on.
could be a field modification by the commander.
as long as you are not competing, or otherwise risking the wrath of the experten,
do what you want!

William, do you think the PE guys give us these pieces that are off-scale just to make the fret look like more of a value? That's what I suspect. I don't see it as a value -- I want to use as little PE as possible! Tongue [:P]

Anyway, I am still on the fence on the MG. I actually do want to make my early A authentic, but the MG and the PE ammo box are so cool .... Sigh [sigh]

Larry,
not sure if that is their plan, or if they merely try to do "everything",
even if PE is not the most suitable medium.

the only PE i used on my Panther was the Tamiya grilles.
i will probably use the MG site off that fret as well.

but i have enough problems w/ the parts that come in the box w/o looking for more trouble.

Just add it Larry. I think they look cool, only you will know the difference and it's not that big of a deal now is it?

Sign - Ditto [#ditto] I'm with them!! If you want it on and it adds to the tank, go for it. Other than right out of the factory, I doubt if any two of these tanks were exactly alike. If I'd been there, I'd have wanted to add that extra firepower! Where did you get this little gem anyway? What's the brand and cost? I've been wanting to put some on that looked better than the kit guns, but haven't found any.

Thanks;

The MG is from Collector's Brass. I've got one on order from the good people at RJ Products, but haven't gotten my hands on it yet. It is a fine, fine looking piece though.

Don't you dare order from them -- I want mine first! Tongue [:P]

Problem is that I have literally scores of pics of the Wiking Panthers from early-mid '44, and none -- NONE --- of them ever have the AA MG. Hence my dilemma. I dunno, maybe I will save it for the late-war Panther G I plan to build up in the summer.

I put a Collectors Brass .50 on my Sheridan, it is very nice, you'll be very happy with your MG 34. As far as the AA mount on your "A", if you really want it authentic save the MG for the "G". Being an SS division it's very possible they had some sort of self propelled AAA assigned to the regiment and didn't need the MG. Just a thought, I have no facts to back that up.
