Question for Maj. Rob...
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, January 12, 2004 9:08 PM
Major Rob:
I served with the 1/68 Armor 8th Inf Div in Germany in the 60's. As I was a mechanic in the HHC Battalion Maintenance Section I'm interested in modeling vehicles I used and worked on. My question is which AFV M88 to get, the "Viet Nam" #35011 or M88A1 #3508. I will want a "gasser", I never saw an M88A1 so I do not know the external differences between the two, if any. Externally, the "Viet Nam" AFV kit has the armor protection on the .50 (we didn't have that in Germany) which probably is easy to eliminate from the build. The 3508 kit does not appear to have the armor, maybe there is detail related to the diesel engine.

External difference was that the M88A1 had a Little Joe APU at the right rear of the crew structure. The Nam era M88 is the gasser so you'd want that one. Also the Nam era kit comes with the workable single link tracks (easy to build and look very good). The .50 cal shield is optional.

I served with 5/77 Armor in 8th ID. About a year before I arrived it had been 3/68 Armor and were colocated with our sister battalion 5/68 Armor (who became 3/77 Armor about a year later). 1/68 was at Wildflicken wasn't it?

Thanks for the info, Major. While I was there (Jan '66-May "68) 1/68 was at Baumholder. There was another tank battalion with us, either 2/68 or 3/68, I don't remenber which one. I think we did some small arms qualifying at Wildflicken.
