Panther ModelKasten Tracks
Posted by wipw on Tuesday, January 13, 2004 3:31 PM
A little help here, please:

I "played" around with my (not)shiney, new box of MK Panther tracks last night. I jigged up and glued my first set of 6 links (and promptly lost one of the two jigs!). They really look good. I hope I can keep all the guide horns lined up for the whole length. My question is, the instructions say (and make kind of a big deal out of it) that there are two different length pins. #1 for the outside and #2 for the inside. They look the same to my beat up, tired old eyes. And, since the "outside" is on different sides of the links depending on which side of the tank the run goes, what possible difference can it make anyway??

Anybody have any experience with this??

wipw, Yep I built that exact set for my panther in the group build. The pins are different. One side has a head on it that is about 1mm thick. I suppose to look like the end of the track pin. The other pin sits almost flush with the outside when pushed in. To tell you the truth I got many of them backwards, but unless you are really looking its hard to spot. I don't think it affects the workability of the tracks. The guide horns are a pain... More boring than anything. I used THICK super glue to build mine. That way there isn't much chance of getting glue where you don't want it. It is worth the effort though.. They look great when done... My set are on Derek's (Claymore68) site under kennethc.

Fun??? Yeah, as a matter of fact. I really enjoy all of it. Well, I'm really trying to convince myself I enjoy the pe side of it, but that's a stretch right now!

Thanks, Kenneth. I've been mauling the pin heads so much I don't think it matters much! I wish they wouldn't have put quite so heavy a connecting point on the links themselves, but that just takes some time. Most of that is hidden by the next link anyway.

Have a modelingly fun day!

Wipw, I didn't clean up any or the sprue attachment points unless they were interfearing with the next link.. You can't see them at all really when they are done. If you are gonna put even the slightest bit of mud on the tracks I'd say skip it...but thats just meBig Smile [:D] And me (according to some folks) is a strange person...
