Flat surface treatment problem 'again'
Posted by Anthony on Wednesday, January 14, 2004 7:01 PM
Hi, ladies and gentlemen. I truly hate to bother you folks with the same question again and again. But I am STILL stuck with the same old problem. Some of you may have recalled that I used to have problem about white residue on my Mr. Color clear flat paint. Now I am using MicroScale Micro Flat finishing paint. The white residue is gone BUT the flatness of the paint is not strong enough to cover the gloss clear paint that I used to seal the decal. Now I am having a semi gloss Revell/German LuchsBanged Head [banghead]. It's all right to have this on an a/c but not on an armour car!! I re-spray few more times without success. Now my questions are:

1) Did I do something wrong in the thinning part? I use 1:1/2 of paint and alcohol.

2) I once used enamel clear flat(from Humbrol) by brush and that work great except it remained brush marks. So is enamel flat clear is always effective than acrylic flat clear?

3) I wonder what flat finish paint you use. Is the Testors enamel flate clear spray work fine?

Thanks for all the helpSmile [:)] Bow [bow]

I've not used some of the product that you are having trouble with Anthony.

But I can touch on the Testor's Dull cote. I've used in successfully through the years as a finish over Tamiya, Model Master, and Gunze Paints acrylics. Never really had any trouble with it (except for the smell).

Anthony, I to have the same problem with the MicroScale Micro Flat, looks like I will be going to the Testor's Dull cote.

Testers Dull Coat has always worked for me.

Tester's Dull Cote has given me problems in the past as well.

If I were to spray a flat finish now, I would use Tamiya's acrylics. I mix my Acrylics with Tamiya Thinner for spraying.

I use Micro Flat without any problems. On the bottle it says to thin with only a few drops of pure water. Might also try boosting your PSI to about 25 lbs and fogging it on by holding the airbrush back about a foot or 18 inches away and letting it go on a little bit drier. Practice on something first, I don't want to be responsible for cratering your Luchs. [:0]

Don't sweat the semi flat thing, I have seen a brand new Leopar 2A5 up close and in person (It is queit cool) and it seems the Bunduswer paint them in a semi flat color.... The tank was semi gloss.... couldn't beleve it my self.... but I have seen it with my own eyes..Confused [%-)]

So I would guess that the luchs is painted in the same way.... (all using the same RAL paints, germans like consistency) Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Anthony, if you want a good flat clear coat try the Tamiya Flat Base mixed in Future. I put 30% flat base to 70% Future and it gives a super "flat" coat. It works great and the fumes don't kill you either!

I use Testors Dullcoat in a rattle can (don't want lacquer in my airbrush)-I'm cafeful to lay on several mist coats rather than 1 thick one. I have occasionally had white spots but the next coat "clears" them.

Another vote for the rattle can Testors dull coat. I've had no problems with it. Just shake the you know what out of it and use in a well ventilated area. I'm not familiar with the products you're having trouble with. I use Testors dull over Testors gloss all the time, no problems.

Testors rattle can does not seem to me to be as flat as their bottled dullcoat. (There is a dedicated thinner for it, but I use lacquer thinner to clean up.) I haven't had any problems with it (other than breathing). Many years ago, Walthers had a dull varnish out called D V V, or DDV, or something like that, that was dead flat. Flattest stuff I've ever seen, but don't know if it's still available. I'll check.

Thanks everbody. I've just tried the Testors dull coat spray. It does improve the coating but still with some semi gloss on it. Perhaps I didn't shake well enough. Finally I airbrush the whole thing with Humbol clear flat enamel. It worked. The smell is unpresent, but still better than Testors sprays(boy it was horribleSigh [sigh]. Again thanks for the helpful suggestion.

BTW, due to the smell of the enamel in airbrush, my mom has just decared war to me. My defence force consists of only 21 tanks and armour cars, 10 planes and 2 war ships in 1/35, 1/48 and 1/72 scale. My mom forces consists one broom stick in 1/1 scale. Boy, God help me!!![:0]

Testors has put out a good acrylic dullcoat which I have used with very good success. Does the job and the smell is much less of a problem than with the enamel base. Thins with their acrylic thinner too.
