I believe the model is actually a Japanese Self Defense Force Type 74 main battle tank. I had this kit when I was a kid. It was exactly as you described in your post. Just by chance I was going through my saved decals and spotted what was left of the decal sheet. Being unsure of what kit it was from, I googled it and found your post. The reverse side says "tamiya", but the decal side says "mbt 71". Sure does bring back memories and would not mind seeing a pic of the model.
As stated, it's the MBT70 from the 1970s. There were two versions of it put out by Aurora, the original "smooth" version and a re-tooled version with texture on the upper hull and turret surfaces. The re-tooled version also includes new molded on suspension detail (shocks, etc.) on the sides of the hull as well as a coiled up rope or cable on the back deck.
The original issue one is slightly more valuable than the re-tooled one. It came in four different boxings. The original was a long box with a painting of the vehicle as boxart. The second was the square box version with a head on shot of the vehicle. It included a vacuformed display base. A nameplate decal was added to the decal sheet. The third boxing was a small white box with a photo of the completed model as the box art. It was the first boxing of the re-tooled version. The fourth boxing was a small cardboard mailer from the Young Model Builder's Club that included the re-tooled kit but used the artwork from the square box.
And the rarest of the rare boxings. All basically the same kit though.
First off, it is/was the MBT-70/XM803, not M.B.T. 71. It was an experimental, joint venture between the US and West Germany in the 1960's and early '70s. Here is a link that tells all about it.
The color was a dark OD common in the '70s.
It never made it past the prototype stage after Germany pulled out of the deal and the program was cancelled.

What kind of info are you looking for? History on the tank? colors? opinions on the kit?
I recently uncovered an old looking 1/48 armor model and wold like some info on it. It is a Tamiya MBT 71 in 1/48 scale. It comes with a motor and rubber treads. It's molded in dark green plastic and has no color instructions with it. Instructions include a breif history and a decal placement guide(double sided).
