What's a good 1/35 WWII German tank kit?
Posted by Gigatron on Wednesday, December 29, 2010 8:45 PM

Hey gang,

I need a piece of WWII german armor, to go along with my Sherman M4A3.  Looking for something with good detail and please, for the love of God, no individual link tracks, LOL.   I don't mind having to scratchbuild a bit here and there, to make something more accurate, but the more accurate OOB, the better.  I'm a plane guy, just looking to add some armor to the display.

Kit complexity isn't an issue, so I don't need a snap-tite kit; I'm just tired of spending a month on the tank and two months on the tracks.

Thanks,

Fred

Seeing as indy link tracks are deffo out i would have to suggest a tamiya kit. mainly because i am not sure which dragon kits don't have the tracks you don't want. I am not entirely sure what period the M4A3 would be from, but i would go for one of the late Pz IV's, namely an H or J, if they are from the right period.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

A Dragon Tiger I, Panther G or Pz IV H with the DS tracks would do you good. They even released them with zimmerit. These kits come with the PE grills and the DS tracks are one-piece. Granted they are spendy, usually around $30 and up on ebay, so perhaps around $40 with shipping.

Another idea would be the Tamiya King Tiger with the Henshel turret. You won't need zimmerit for it, but will have to buy some PE grills. The Pz III L is a great kit as is the Wespe. You'd need PE grills for the Pz III as well. HTH

Yeah Gigatron, Bish is giving you a good start. When I saw the tracks in the Dragon kits, I went out and found metal - if I'm going to put together a couple a' hundred links, might as well!

I've found the sponsons on some of the Tamiya PzKw IV's may need to be sealed up underneath, not a whole lot of scratch, but enough to be interesting. That's because on some castings the fender is included with the sponson, ie usually the whole top is cast as one piece.

Some manufacturers/configurations cast the fenders separately, and the sponsons are glued on top of the fenders so the sponson is sealed.

The Tamiya vinyl tracks are excellent, but do melt very easily. -ahem  Bang Head.

If you want to make the Panzer look real bad, put some schurzen on it ( I'm guessing 1943ish), for schur!

I forgot, any of the Tamiya Marder III kits are excellent too. Hence the picture in my profile.

If you are not specifically looking for a tank, you might consider some of the DML armored cars - the 234 series for example.  Or the Tamiya 222.

Thanks for all the suggestions, gents Cool

I'll pop on over to a few of the internet stores (we don't have any LHSs around these parts) and take a look at the suggested vehicles and take it from there.
