My First 2011 build... Complete! (British 10 HP)
Posted by Njal Thorgeirsson on Saturday, January 1, 2011 11:48 PM

So last semester was about the most stressful handful of months I've ever experienced so I haven't exactly had much time to model. Practically none in fact. What time I've had has been devoted to building instead of updating some of my WIP's that I'll get back to once I make some good progress. Anyways, I got this kit for Christmas and I just thought I'd spend some quality time on it. I started it two days ago (the 29th) and finished her up pretty quick. The windows turned out a bit foggier than I would have liked, and I might try to fix that later.. suggestions anyone?? (its just Mig pigment that doesn't seem to want to come off)... But I'm very happy witht the results on this simple kit. Building it took about 3-5 hours, and painting was probably 8-10 hours... The decals were a real challenge, as the ones on the front fenders took a lot of work to get them to conform with the curved surface (to get the creases to disappear). It was a fun, simple, and rewarding build. I don't know how much I'll be active on FSM in the coming months, but at some point I'd like to get started on the Trumpeter K5 railgun that I got for Christmas..........

Nice job on an unusual subject. I agree with you on the windows and unfortunately don't have an answer.

Nice work on the little Tilly Ryan! My advice is the same as Ron's, applying some Future might mitigate and/or remove the pigment effect. What did you use to apply the pigments with as that might also help solve the problem?

Thanks for the advice and comments, Bill and Ron! I will try some Future, and I'll try it on the inside of the windows in doors first. Should I dilute the Future at all?

I did try to use mineral spirit thinner to remove the pigment (thats what I applied it with), and it definitely did not help.

Ryan,

No need to dilute the Future...if at all possible for you to pop the windows out, your best bet would be to "dip" them into the Future.

I don't think a straight dipping will be enough though. The mineral spirits are what's causing you grief. It's allowed the pigment fine particles to get suspended in the medium and is what is causing the fogging while at the same time "fixing" the pigments in position...it's very similar to the effect produced by a dull coat application in fact. You need a way to remove and/or negate the pigments suspended in the mineral spirits in a way that doesn't allow them to "re-appear" in suspension when the carrier dries. It sounds like you've already tried using clean mineral spirits to remove them with no success. I would suggest you try "stripping" the clear parts like you would to remove paint first and then dipping them again in the Future to restore them to a true "clear" appearance. All theoretical as I've never tried this approach myself so it's not a guarantee that it will work. HTH!

I got this thing they call a nail buffer from a beauty shop and it is used to make the fingernails shiny. A stick comes with three surface, the last one being for really buffing the nails to a deep shine. I have used it on canopies and some windows and it worked. I usually finish the work with clear paint. I gues you have to remove the glass windows first.

I would buff the hell out of it and then use the future. it sounds like the mineral spirits crazed the plastic
