German Markings
Posted by raffrecon on Friday, January 7, 2011 9:12 PM

Hey guys, I'm doing a dio that includes a tipped over German Half track in a culvert. What would be acceptable number markings for the vehicle in around Normandy? Not much of the vehicle's top will be visible but I would still like to be accurate. I'm not very knowledgeable with German WWII units. Thanks.

Red numbers with a white outline would work for the 12th SS Panzer Division.

Thanks you very much. I think I understand the marking system. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

First numeral: Division

Second Marking: Company

Third Marking: Vehicle

Thats a really odd way of doing it.  It seems that it would be more useful have it arranged more as battalion, platoon, vehicle.  If, horror, your echelon becomes mixed into another division; you could use the symbol markings to separate the divisions.  It seems that formations would intermix battalions and companies before mixing into other divisions.

Its Company, Platoon, Vehicle. The only marking for Division would be the Din insignia if carried. By Normandy numbers and markings were sometimes not applied. Depending on the vehicle, it may also have a badge indicating its role.

What type of half track is it.

It's a 251/16 Ausf C (Flamethrower). I stripped the flamethrower and fuel lines from it to make more generic. I selvaged it from an older kit that someone else started and didn't finish. Nor did they doe a very good job.  for this reason, I decided to include it in a dio. Not much of the vehicle will be visible. Mostly the bottom and the roght side. the left side and most of the top will be submerged in "water". Can I get away with just a German cross on the side?

Most photos of /16's do not have numbers on the side. I have the Dragon Ausf C and D /16 and neither have much in the way of markings, off the top of my head i don't think either is even assigned to a unit. A cross on the side and rear would be fine. These belonged to engineer unit, so a marking for that on the rear would be ok, but again not essential.
