Vinyl tank tires
Posted by Thunderbolt379 on Friday, January 7, 2011 11:46 PM

Hi all,

I know this is the umpteenth post on this subject -- I had a quick look through the archives via the search function -- but I'm wondering if anybody developed a solid technique for dealing with those shiny black tires Academy experiemented with many years ago? The shine is the problem, really... I had meant to tone it back with MiG pigments but I'm not having much luck getting the stuff to stick.

It occurs to me that I could spray them, but they're so flexible the paint would surely just flake off? What about a coat of clear acrylic flat to kill the shine? Pigments would probably adhere better over that...

If anyone has any tips, I'm all ears!

Cheers, Mike/TB379

Sanding them gives them a nice realistic look (if they are the ones I am thinking about). One thing that was nice about those is that they were easy to mar and take chunks out of with a #11 blade for a more 'used' look.

Just experiment with what grit paper that you use. It is pretty much the same technique used for making model car tires look used.

Better yet...I use a kitchen Scotch Brite pad. Get a new one. use the green scrub side. Give nice realistic ware and makes them flat!!
