Bronco's 1/35 17pdr Self-Propelled Gun
Posted by IBuild148 on Sunday, January 9, 2011 9:33 PM

Good Evening,

While relaxing this evening watching Gilligan's Island (felling nostalgic), working on my builds and reading the forums I took a break to read the latest edition of FSM magazine.

On page 3 Bronco has an ad for their new kit releases and the 17pdr Self-Propelled Gun "Archer" caught my eye. Since I promised myself that I would build at least 3 US Army WWII vehicles this year and I have just washed the M3 Scout Car as one of them I thought that this may be my second choice.

Like always I try to get some info on my builds before I start for accuracy. During my Google search it says that this vehicle was used by the U.K and Egypt but the photo in the ad shows an American 'star'

Did the US Army use this gun during WWII?

Thanks

Nope, the white star was used across the allied fleet of vehicles used world-wide.  I don't think the US used these, having their own tank killers based on the M4 chassis.

Terry Ashley has done a build review on one. It's a honey of a kit but not for the faint of heart with nearly 1300 parts.

His review should answer some of your questions. And no I don't think the US used them. It's a British Chassis and British gun.

Why do we need a kit with 1300 parts? I can guarantee I will never buy one. Knock Tamiya all you want, but I'll take one with 300 parts over 1300 in a second. There''s more to life then working two-years on the same kit.

Hee Hee Hee... No doubt, Tigerman. Everyone has their taste, some it's quick builds and others it's every conceivable detail... To each their own!

Gimme all the details there are.  I'll spend 5 years building one kit if that's what it takes and add another 1300 parts in the process.  I know that's sick but I can't help it.

1,300 pieces?!?!? Stick out tongue I'd love to get this kit.  Building is my favorite part in modeling so I am for any kits with high number of parts such as Dragon kits.  My Stug III Ausf B from Tamiya with only 200-300 parts took me only two nights to build and I was disappointed that it was too quick except for the MK tracks I added to the kit...

Ditto I enjoy the build part of modeling.  The more parts the better.  Have been waiting for a good kit of the Archer to come out.  This has been one I have always wanted.  Just not looking forward too the price that will probably be on it.  It will be one to get though.

I read the review K-dawg sent and I also read a review on Armorama and it listed the price at $70. Great Models is taking pre-orders for $72.50.

I don't mind the part count but I'm not spending $70 + shipping.

I agree Eric that sounds like too damn much work to me too although down the line if i find one cheap enough i probably would build it,, or shelve it like those dragon pz super kits i have that i still tell myself i will build one day.....  Indifferent

I get that it's pricey but you also have to look at the play value you get for that. If it takes you 6 months to build a kit that cost $75 bucks that's pretty cheap entertainment. On the flip side you can get a nice new Tamiya kit for $50 and be done with it in a weekend....

It's all a relative I guess..

I too enjoy the construction part. I usually bogg down during the painting and weathering.

I believe this Archer will be on my build list of later this year or next when the price come down, along with the M4A3E2 Assault Sherman from Tasca.

Of course, just wait until Dragon comes out with a 2000 part one. Everyone will race to buy the new Dragon one because it will be assumed to be better and  come with "Beute PaK" captured German markings.

The rushing masses will sell their unbuilt Bronco kits at half off retail.
