My daughter came home the other day saying, "Dad, you wish you were with me just now, trust me."  Then she shows me these.  But what is it?

M109 self propelled howitzer. Not sure of the variant.

M109 of some flavor, probably a Paladin (M109A6).

Peterbuilt tractor-trailor combo, I'm guessing a 2005 model by the shape of the chrome exhaust stacks...

What a great daughter!

What a dilemma for a Dad. Did you thank her for taking pictures? Or scold her for using her camera (phone) while driving? Tongue Tied

Actually ,they are Freightliner Classic XL's - the make or model year on any truck can not be determined by the exhaust stacks.

I would have to disagree, I always clearly mark the make, model & year of my rig on my huge chrome stack's - just so that any would-be passers by can easily identify it!

Lightened 'em up for ya a bit to make them easier to see. It's an M109A3 155mm Self Propelled Howitzer, not the M109A6 Paladin...  Easiest way to tell them apart, aside from the much smaller bustle rack, shallower TC cupola, gun mantlet, lack of radios, and turret side-hatches is the long travel lock holding the gun tube there in front.  The Paladin's travel lock is remote-operated, shorter, and  "beefier" (Thicker-looking) than the Alpha -3s are (Bottom Photo is of an Alpha-6)...

Hope you don't mind I didn't ask first...

You have to remember....Hans spent a bunch of time inside the M109A3...Bang Head

The real question is where in the wide world of sports is an M109A3 headed.....they are essentially out of the system....unless this bad boy is headed for some VFW front yard!!

Calm down Hans....I know your excited Stick out tongue

My guess is Picatiny Arsenal or to the York plant to be rebuilt into something newer or it belongs to the Guard.

Looks to me like it just got recent coat of paint, so you may be right about the VFW... Note the newly-tan track connectors at the center-top of the track, where it rested in the drive sprocket during the repaint...   At least we know the track DID move at one time..... It hasn't been doing much since it got repainted, though...

Alpha-3s are out of the system, you say... Man...  That tears it... Every vehicle I ever trained on or lived in is now in a museum or on a pad...  Now I know how Dad felt when the Air Force retired the F-4... It was the last fighter he ever flew...  The M109A3 was the last gun I ever chiefed...

Calm down Hans....I know your excited

Well... yeah... Although I gotta admit that when I left the FA and moved on to the Chemical Corps, I was sick of being couped-up in that damned gun, banging my head on every little fitting, handle, rack, and lever in/on/around it, babying it, cursing it, breaking it, fixing it, loading and unloading it, (never got sick of shooting it though)  and never wanted to have to live in one again.... But I guess time and distance will change things...    Even when I rub the dent in my skull from the night I ran full-tilt into the bore evacuator and knocked my azz out...Whistling

My crew didn't find me right away, because I fell bass-ackwards in some tall grass, but they knew I was out there, since all heard the "BOOONNNGGG!"  Sounded like a churchbell when I hit that thing, and I looked like I'd been shot in the head, lol...  Had to wear m' CVC helmet on the back of m' head like a beenie Propeller...

Was able to watch the offloading of an M-60 variant at our local American legion club,it was obvious that the drivetrain had been removed..I could possibly get some very good shots of the exterior, interior ?? I know of a sherman in a little town in No. Dak,and an odd piece of artillery in a public park in Mentor Mn.. Some cool relics out there yet.Cool

Here's another one for you:

OK Hans, what's this version? What's wrong around the mantlet?

Looks like it was parked in the wrong part of post, back end's stripped.

You have posted a Frankenstein.....this is an M108 with an M109A3 cannon.....

Top photo....no kit boxes on the roof of the turret......the boxes were for 155mm, were not on the M108

Middle Photo....Bolted mantlet and elbow telescope sight as on the M108.....also the tube travel lock looks like it is for a 105mm M108

Bottom Photo.....No recoil spades like the M108

It also has the split rear door of the M108.  It sure is a strange one.  It is kind of like the Howitzer at the front gate f Ft stewart.  It is an M109A3 with the stowage baskets of an M109A6 Paladin bolted to it so it looks like a Paladin.  The Abrams next to it is an M1 w/no NBC system, short BII boxes, etc.  It either has a bore evac from an M1A1 or a whole barrel from an M1A1 added to it as well.  Gotta love when the musuem tries to update their pieces.

Here they are.
