weathering tank tracks
Posted by armored saint on Friday, February 25, 2011 6:38 PM

Several months ago, I purchased an issue of Scale Model Enthusiasts (can't remember issue #), and one article indicated that to effectively achieve correct weathering results on tank tracks, one can use acrylic paint (black and reddish brown), and once the paint dries it will turn to a realistic rust look??! I for one attempted this several times and have failed!? What else can I do to achieve this result?? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

We each have a method that we like and works. My method is this: I spray a dark brown mixed with a little red acrylic craft paints. When dry, I use multiple washes of oil paints, starting with black to darken corners and pop out details. When dry, I follow up with various rust color oil washes. I then take a No.2 pencil and touch up any part that will show shiny metal from use. Its time consuming but works out really good.

what ever you do, go very light on rust if it is a active vehicle. It takes a long time for rust to appear.
