Just bought a DVD copy of the Unknown War TV series done in the late 70's. (These are copies off TV - the quality is perfectly good. Like VHS. $40 for 20 hours. Google it: it's available from a few sources.) The series was subsidized by the Soviet government in response to Thames' masterpiece "World at War" (which remains the single best documentary series done for tv of any type). Burt Lancaster narrates. The show was a ratings dud in the West and was even pulled from some stations because the Soviet patriotism is laid on very thick - and so are some historical distortions. That said, the series is based almost entirely upon stock footage and some of that is really good. I'm not sure how much Stalin paid his cameramen, but they were obviously expected to take risks. There are also some interviews with gents like Zhukov and Chuikov. Well worth it for Eastern Front fans. And, as you might imagine, there are lots of tanks.
