Like the guys have said, the main difference between the M1 and M1A1 is the 120mm gun. Also the bustle rack was added to all straight M1s when they were all upgraded to M1IPs. Another sure sign are the turret sponson boxes. The M1 and M1IP had short sponson boxes that did not go to the end of the turret. The M1A1 has longer sponson boxes that go almost all the way back to the end of the turret. Additionally, the turret blast panels on the M1/M1IP were 3 assymetrical panels, the M1A1 has two identical panels. The left hull sponson box was replaced by the NBC system, this caused the fire extinguisher port to be slightly relocated.

The last side skirt is not really a good determiner of an M1 or M1A1 since the original ones were just cut out by the unit welder. It was a good idea that eventually made it into production.

Lot of little problems to adjust as well. Overall color was forest green, I know Model Master makes this shade in both spray and bottle (I use it a lot!).

Best bet is to build his kit OOB in the color he wants or try to find the rare original issue Tamiya M1 or find the really cheap Esci/AMT/Ertl version of the M1. We used to spend big money on these two kits to update them to M1A1 standards. Believe me, I still have a full resin upgrade set!

If you type Abrams battle tank or M1 tank into Google.com you will come up with all kinds of web pages pertaining to this tank. Also look up US Army Armor and US Army Tanks will give you loads of info. Good luck hunting.

If you have a M1A1 kit to back dated it would be very difficult. Besides the main gun, the blast planels on top of the turret are different, the side sponson boxes on the turret are larger on the M1A1. Your best bet is to build the A1.If the person was on M-1s in the 80's, most likely it was a M-1IP. The most noticable item on the IPs was the addition of a rear bustle rack. We operate M1-IPs and not 2 have the same shade of green, we have dark green to medium green. And if you like I have been on M1A1s that we're painted over all medium green. I hope this little info helps. If you like to learn more on the M-1 series I;m sure the good Major has a few.

The main difference I believe is the gun. The M1 carries the 105mm rifled canon while the M1A1 carries a 120mm smoothbore canon. Also I saw pictures showing that M1's don't have that cargo carrying rack at the rear of the turret while M1A1's do. The shape of the sideskirt covering the sprocket also looks different between the M1 and M1A1.

Pictures of M1's that I have seen usually indicates that the tanks are painted in what loks to me as olive drab but I am not very sure about the exact colors.

The other differences could probably be explained more clearly by Maj. Rob who has tons of experience in those tanks.

For the meantime please check this link about the Abrams MBT.

Good luck.

A fellow co-worker has asked me to build a model of an M1 tank for his brother for his B-day. He was on an Abrams in the 80's. The pic he showed me was an all-green tank. The kit he gave me to build is a M1A1. And not knowing much on modern armor, I need to ask two questions.

1. What is the exterior differences of the M1 to the M1A1?

2. What is the color of the overall-green M1 tank? I 'm looking for FS numbers.

Thanks,
