IIRC, it was designed in response to the Russian T-28 and T-35's.

Really you are correct, it wasn't a real evolution from say a Pz IV to a Panther as the next step in tank design.

It's from my favorite time period in armor development; back when armies weren't quite sure which direction to go for the next tank. It was a dead end down the "land battleship" route. It's something we take for granted today, what's the best mix of armor, armament and mobility.

But back then, they didn't know what would and would not work until they built it, trialed it and developed doctrine to employ it.

And often times that didn't show the true test until the tank saw combat.

 tigerman:

It does fill a gap in Panzer evolution.

I thought it was more of an evolutionary dead end than an evolutionary step. It is an interesting subject and since it is German, high quality and different, it will probably sell like hotcakes, go OOP and then hit the secondary market for big bucks.

Then of course, one of the experts will note that there is a missing bolt head on a sprocket and the rest of the modeling world will use that as a reason to universally pan the kit. Trumpeter will then copy it with the corrected bolt head detail and all will be fine once again!

Edit: the above was posted tongue-in-cheek, but I did find a review of the kit on the old school rec.models.scale news group. Apparently, the kit is the 2nd prototype and not the proper armored version. Oh, the horrors!

I could be wrong but I recall when this was first announced that this version of the NebauFahrzeug is modelled after one of the first production mild steel prototypes that never saw action.  I recall someone saying that DML/CH will produce the combat version later.

If you want esoteric, I think that fits the bill.

Welcome back Huxy.

I have also wanted one of these kits because as mentioned it fills an important gap. Is this a Cyber Hobby kit, if so will have to get it while i have the cash as they usually ain't cheap.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Welcome back Huxy!  Wondered where did you go?  I figured Swedish girls kidnapped you once again. Whistling

This kit is a must for me too... it saw action in Denmark and I was there last summer.  Loved the country... their beer is one of the best!  I would wait for few months until the price drops...

Really, I check in after nearly 6 months absence to modelling (due to heavy load of work and school, I didn't mean to :( )

And THIS is what I get!?

I was waiting to get into modelling and try my hand on the Armo's one in resin.

This is a tank I've always wanted to build, mainly because most of the few produced saw combat in Norway, where I live. Proud Norwegian need to represent the occupying force.. No wait... Whistling

Heh, this makes me wanna build again right now, and create another Norway WWII GB.....

Oh, if I only had the time  Dead

Geist

Sorry, this is old news. I posted about it when it was first announced.

I don't see why everyone is moaning about it. I think it's great that Dragon is in a position to release little know vehicles like this one. As mentioned, it sure beats the numerous Sherman/Panzer I-IV variants that have been released lately.

Erik

I'm not moaning about it. It is great that esoteric vehicles like this and Fine Molds' Type 89 (http://www.hlj.com/product/FNMOTH-02) are produced as opposed to the umpteenth variant of the Sherman or Tiger (that we used to be able to convert ourselves with just a few pieces of resin or scratchbuilding).

I'm just bemused that they continue to find onesie-twosie subjects to produce when there are still dozens of mainstream subjects (ones that served in the hundreds) that have yet to see the light of day in plastic.

It's only a matter of time before they start producing kits of panzers that Hitler Youths drew with crayons in kindergarten and taped to the classroom wall.
