Using stored, mixed paints?
Posted by Hinksy on Monday, April 4, 2011 6:53 AM

Hi guys,

A quick question:

I started painting my Marder III M yesterday and used a lovely shade of DY that I'd made up for my Hetzer which I recently built. The paint was a 50:50 mix of dark yellow and buff with a little white added.

I've noticed that in areas the paint seems a little soft and is easily chipped. Luckily the main structure seems fine but on the cast barrel hood paint has lifted in places - to ensure a nice even covering I've scraped off all the paint down to the bare plastic and I'll paint it again at the weekend.

Should I not be using stored, mixed paint? It's no massive problem but I've never had my Tamiya paints do this before?

The fact I was able to scrape off all of the paint on the barrel hood surely suggests something went wrong? How long do you chaps think that Tamiya paints should be left alone, totally undisturbed, until they are fully cured.

Many thanks,

Ben Cool

Hi Ben,

Mixed paint shouldn't be a problem, but I would suggest not thinning the mix until you intend to use it.

I would say leave it at least overnight, preferably 18-24 hours to allow time to cure. It should be fairly easy to scratch the paint off within say, the frst 6 hours or so after application.

Typically, when insufficiently cured, Tamiya paint will scratch relatively cleanly. If you scratch it after it's fully cured and the scratch penetrates the paint layer, the paint along the scratch literally shatters and under magnification, looks jagged around the edges, like shattered glass.

If you have any dried paint you wish to clean up, methylated spirits will do the job very nicely.

Ditto

Storing mixed paint isn't a problem, but storing mixed & thinned paint is a no-no.
