mixing paints

Never done it myself, but I think thre's a small catch, since ModelMaster is waterbased (hence the name) and Tamiya is alcohol based (Isopropanol to be exact). However, I know some people thin Tamiya with water as well, so I'm not entirely sure this combination you suggest is a No-No....

Tamiya is a hybrid paint. It is part laquor and can be thined with Isopropanol or a small amount of water but is best thinned with laquor thinner.

MM Acrylic is a pure water base acrylic and can be thinned with water or with isopropanol or even a touch of windex. MM Acrylic is somewhat compatable with Poly Scale paint (made by same company)

I have never tried to mix Tamiya and MM. If you are going to try it, mix a small amount and see how it dries.

In general I try not to mix different manufacturers of paint.

Ok. These are the results thus far. I mixed equal parts tamiya buff with mm dunkergelb. Mix went fine. Good color transition and kept good consistency. Dotted my pad with this mix and am awaiting drying. I also added another equal part alcohol to this mix and got ok results except it really made it super thin. So in practice ill use half that. its still drying right now. I did a thin coat and a simi thick drop. The thin coat dried fine and is even. The thick is marbling. So base coat no dice but I think I might get away with highlighting the base coat which is what I needed.

Please let the forum know how it dries, colo(u)r shift & Adhesion, ie, does it STICK to the surface.

 

Alrighty we have a winner. So just applied my first fade. And it went well. It blew thru the airbrush fine, and stuck to the surface nicely. I thinned it pretty well so it would dry before any separation. Nothing seems off base. Now this was my first coat so only a small amount of tamiya paint was used. Ill post again this evening on how I do with more of. The buff in the mix. And now two days after my brush test have settled. The thin stroke I put down dried fine and stuck well. The thick stroke stuck well but now has a greenish hue. So again as a base coat I won't use. But thinned out good enough it can be. So in a pinch these two paints so far are compatable. Which is nice cause that's all they sell in my area.

Well did two more fades and got it down to bout 50/50 and things went fine. You have to work fast though. The more tam. I added the faster it marbled in my mixing cup. I'm stopping there though. I modeled my jag out the box so not a lot of wear and tear on this one. Plus its gonna have camo so I don't think it needs that much modulation. Plus I clean my brush in the sink and allow it to dry on the counter. This evening my daughter cleaned the kitchen and dropped it and bent the tip so now I don't have a mid range soooo... Needless to say I'm now planning my next trip to the hobby shop before my dak pz3
