The Wolf

I got two about a month ago; have not glued yet, but have pieced together some parts and they do fit together very well.  There are some pretty bad errors in it.  Among them are:  spare tire on bonnet (hood), this is usually mounted on the cage, a mesh storage 'basket' is usually on the hood; seat in rear is on the wrong side, should be behind the GPMG (commander's) seat; mount for L85s should be mounted in a vertical position between the front seats; the weapons are all pretty crude--L85s(too big), GPMG(looks like blank-firing mode) and .50 machine gun(too big) really need to be replaced.  Tires might need replacement as well.  Legend already has an update set out, supplies mostly packs and bags of questionable origin (do not look British), ballistic protection 'blankets', deep wading snorkle, storage 'basket' for bonnet(covered by air recognition panel?)  and other modifications for mainly late model vehicles.  Strangely, weapons and tires are not addressed, will need to get yet another set (if it comes out) to replace these.  However, it is great to finally have an injected plastic kit available.  It appears to go together easily and its 'warts' can be corrected rather easily.  It does not have the overall detail of Accurate Armour's WMIK (now discontinued), but it is less expensive (unless you plan on purchasing update sets) and in a more familiar medium that should attract more modelers to build this vehicle.  I believe Hobby Boss plan on releasing other versions of this vehicle--sure hope so!!  I think they will sell very well.       

USAFSPOOK Thanks for your reply. I have some misgivings about the MGs too. You mentioned the tires, don't you find them a little too small? or should it be the right size? The Mgs are also their (HB) weakness in the 706. The load will be easy. The mesh basket for the tire I saw on the Accurate Armor version. I have started building mine. Working on subassemblies makes it easier. You have any info on the engine color. The instruction is asking for flat blacks and silvers.

Constructor, Yes,  I believe the tires ar a little on the small side, especially when compared to the Accurate Armour version.  As far as engine colours, I am using Bob Morrison's books - Combat Land Rovers, Portfolio No.1, and Modern Military Land Rovers in Colour 1971-1994 as  guides.  The former is published by Brooklands Books and is still available--last time I checked- and has many great colour and B&W photos of interiors, engines, underneath framing,etc..  Sadly, the latter is rather hard to find and quite expensive if one can be found.  Anyway, I'll give you the notes I have made regarding engine colours that are different than in the instructions: the overall engine colour should be a dull silver or aluminum; parts A51/A50 should be silver; A27/A31 black with silver bands; A26 white plastic; A48 silver(?); A45/A46 black (p. 10 of instructions); A44 white (p. 11 of instructions); A49 black( also p. 11).  There are some various containers missing under the hood,but it does look the part.  When I say silver, a dull silver or aluminum is best.  Would be glad to hear if others have different ideas on what to use.  Please send any other notes/suggestions on construction; final picture would be nice!  Are you going to use any aftermarket or wait for any  or are you going with out of the box? I take it you guys are talking about a stripped down Wolf as used in Afghan. Would love to see some pics. As for the engine colours, i would agree Aluminium and blck. I can't recall any other colours from the last time i looked.

That's the one alright. When I was browsing thru the British Army website, I came across the picture of the Wolf against a background of the sky in flames. I guess the pic was taken on the road to Basra and Hobby Boss used that as an idea for the cover of their Wolf kit. A nice kit too. I hope I am able to make good of it. Just a pity no figures were included. Will MiniArt take note?

I look for forward to seeing some pics. I am not much into modern British stuff, but i have seen some modern British figures, just not sure where.

I plan on using a set of Accurate Armour's figures made for their SAS Defender.  They will have to be modified somewhat, but they are the closest figures around.  I doubt any of the big boys will make a set for such a specific vehicle, but who knows these days?
