I'm thinking about building a 1/48 Sherman. I am looking at the Hobby Boss line, but I noticed several from HB have 30 cals on the turret. Before this, I've only noticed 50s mounted on the turret. Does anyone know if they actually used 30s on the turret in WWII? Also, what do you guys think of Hobby Boss in general? Any info is appreciated.
Here's a link to Hobby Boss 1/48 scale reviews. You may find it useful. For the most part, 1/48 scale modelers eagerly anticipated the Hobby Boss Shermans, but most talk I've read on the kits complain about dimensional areas. This has its ups and downs. The downside is that Hobby Boss left the 1/48 scale market, the upside is that the remaining kits go fo very little money.

Not too certain since I have not researched this topic. I have seen pictures of browning .30's and .50's on top of the turret though....
I think the 4th armored did this in WWII. I've also seen pictures of this in the Korean war also. The .30 was the hull and coaxial (turret mounted-beside the main gun) weapon for the Sherman.
The .30 was occasionally seen although the .50 was more common. It was up to the crews or unit commanders. Your best bet is to find a period photo and match it.

As a rule, Shermans had a 30-cal hull gun (sometimes supplanted with a flame thrower, i.e. the “Ronson” variant), a co-axial 30-cal, and a 50-cal up top. Here are two shots from “The War of the Worlds” (1953) that show the 50-cal in “travel” position:

I have the U.S M4A1 (76) W Sherman Medium Tank offering and out of the box I have no complaints. Granted I don't generally go over my models with a microscope.
My kit has a 50 on the turret by the way and it is an 84801 release. I have no beef with parts and no issues with assembly and the one piece tracks are ok. It came with PE for the usual things like hand holds and light guards.
I would not hesitate to do another HB 1/48th scale item at all.

You shouldn't have any reservations, their T-34 and KV series were well regarded. I believe it was just the Shermans, good detail, just purists that noted dimensional issues. I've got a few and think they look pretty good.

Okay, a 30-cal top mount makes sense for a Sherman that saw duty in the Philippines. I managed to locate two images of the real “Classy Peg”.
So do you want to build this specific tank or just a tank of this particular type?
