Gov't Report: Styrene Contact Should Be Avoided
Posted by aardvark1917 on Saturday, June 18, 2011 2:34 AM

OH NO!!!

Styrene is now listed as a "possible" carcinogen, and the public should try to stay away from it as much as possible. Side-effects listed in this report are "… headache, fatigue, dizziness, confusion, drowsiness, malaise, difficulty in concentrating, and a feeling of intoxication".

Might we see a time when warning labels are affixed to kit boxes, and their sale restricted to those over 18?

Discuss.

Aren't those the side-effects from modeling in general?

If they didn't want people eating lead paint...Ick!

Why does it taste so good?Eats

Seriously living is a possible carcinogen, in fact everyone has malignant tumors that may develop into cancer if:

a) The immune system weakens and is unable to combat the tumor,

b) The tumor 'tricks' the immune system to believe the growth is normal

c) Outside toxic (carcinogens) trigger the cells to grow unchecked, suppressing the immune system simultaneously

OK....pop quiz, what chemical is attrubited to more deaths annuallly??????........

Dihydrogen Monoxide.....nasty stuff......make styrene look tame.....

Some chemicals that we deal with in our hobby can be nasty....solvents for our paints especially. Styrene, before it is polymerized into a plastic is NASTY. Now as the plastic we all know and love it is just fine.

The difference is between Styrene the chemical which is a monomer used to make a plastic. and Polystyrene which is a polymer and is the plastic we all know and love though we call it Styrene for short.

You would not want a model made out of Styrene......it is a liquid at room temperature!

Oh by the way, the dangerous chemical I mentioned as I opened is water. It kills more people every year than any other chemical. What we call thing and their chemical names are two different things.

Back to the laboratory

I don't believe that styrene is hazardous to my health. It's hazardous only to my wealth. Last year I bought 257 kits total and I thought that figure would be hard to break. Alas, I broke that record in first 5 months this year. The new figure is now 300+ and I don't know what figure will be at year's end. Much poorer now I am!

If anyone is now afraid to build models due to the warning, I will be glad to take all of your models and dispose of them properly for you.  Just send them to me.  Big Smile

I always get a kick out of the little white circular labels attached to my bottles of lacquer-based metalizer paints that says "Warning: This product contains a chemical known to the State of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm." Nothing about the fumes or the need for proper ventilation, only the warning about birth defects. Propeller

Everything is technically dangerous. Why just a bit of playing around with your partner and you run the risk of becoming parents (which leads to teenagers :)).

............What!  We are not supposed to supposed to eat our scale models? Where will the invasion of the nanny state into are personal lives?  This is probably part of California's long running war against bottled water and plastic packaging. They probably don't like Lego blocks either since little kids use them to build houses for themselves and learn materialism...............Seriously the key board I'm typing on now is made of plastic. I'm sure the key are full of all sorts of nasty chemicals but, unless I set fire to my key board and breath deeply, they are unlikely to get into my body.  As the environmentalists like to tell us plastic doesn't brake down to its basic components for thousands of years.................Like the sign on the boarder says: "Keep it up with over regulation, California. Nevada needs jobs." .................Come to think of it HP and all of the other Silicone valley companies can move to my home state, Michigan, and make plastic key boards. We'll take are chances with the proper safety standards of course..

Good to hear that "the State of California" is so worried about my health. Next, they will be trying to balance my checkbook.
