Painting Magic Tracks
Posted by StreetFightingMan on Tuesday, June 28, 2011 10:43 AM

Okay, I'm working on one of Cyberhobby's Panzer III's and I'm about to assemble the Magic Tracks.  I've painted the wheels seperate from the model and I'm currently in the process of assembling the lower hull so that I can attach the wheels and tracks.  I'm wondering how to paint the tracks.  It seems that I could put the wheels on and fit the tracks to the model in subassamblies, glue them to their correct form, and take them off and paint them.  Once I've painted them, I would attach the subassemblies back to the model.  However, I'm wondering how I wouyld glue them without gluing them to the model.  This also seems like there is a lot of room for mistakes.  What techniques do you suggest? If you know of any articles that may help, please attach links.  Thanks!

-Mike

There is an article over on Armorama by the Doog on how to assemble indy tracks.

  • Recently for my Jagdtiger, I made one long run.
  • I applied testors liquid glue with the little brush, applying generously and waited for an hour.
  • By then the tracks are pretty adhered, but not totally set.
  • Then I shaped the long run around the sprockets and wheels.
  • I left the ends of the track run unglued, so that I could remove the run safely after it was shaped and cured.
  • I put cotton balls on the top part of the run to give the tracks sag.
  • I waited a full 24 hours and removed the cotton balls. By now the track has set rock hard and can be painted and weathered without problems.

Hope this helps a bit. It worked for me. Doog's is a little bit more involved with tape.

Nice method. I have got round to doing Indy tracks yet, apart from a 251 set and there pretty easy. I have a few kits in the stash with these tracks and been woundering how to go abou ti. This sounds nice and simple, just need to get some testors glue. I take it this stuff takes a while to dry, and do you apply it over the whole track.

I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Yes it takes awhile. The key is to make sure that it's not totally set. I waited about an hour, so check in to see how it's setting. (warmer climates might have it cure faster) I should also mention that I left the drive sprocket and idler unglued just in case. As long as the track isn't glued at one spot, it will come apart nicely enough.

Here's the Doogs method:

Just to get this straight, I set the tracks flat on the table, and then put on liquid glue. I let this set up so that it won't stick to the model, but so that's it can still be formed to the model.  At this point, I put it on the drives and wheels and form it to the model.  I let it dry completely, and then remove it from the wheels and airbrush the strips of track. Is this right?

Yep. Let it set flat for about an hour. Then you should be able to bend them around the drive sprocket and idler without the links falling apart. It's up to you as to where you want the one link to be unglued. I just snapped it into place, carefully marking that point with pencil. This way you can undo the track at that point to remove the tracks for painting.

This isn't a good example of the tracks with the one part unglued, but it does show how sturdy they are.

Thanks Tiger, i will have to try and find it over here.  I don't think to much heat is something i have to worry about.

Very nice, Tigerman. Those tracks look like they're being held up by "ghost wheels"!
